BOSTON – Beginning Friday's CAA game with a 21-5 scoring run and never looking back, the Northeastern women's basketball team sported a dominant, wire-to-wire victory against fourth-place UNCW at Cabot Center as the Huskies thumped the Seahawks, 83-54, to remain competitive in the race for postseason seeding.

Entering the final regular season home weekend of her collegiate career, senior point guard
Jess Genco went off for 28 points to lead Northeastern (16-10, 6-9 CAA), shooting 10-for-16 from the field and six-for-10 behind the arc. Upon appearing in Friday's starting lineup, Genco became the Huskies' exclusive record holder in career starts (116), breaking her tie with Melissa Kowalski atop the all-time list.
Â
Junior shooting guard
Shannon Todd accounted for four of the Huskies' 13 3-point baskets – two shy of the program record, although equaling the team's season high for perimeter makes (Nov. 28 at Florida).
Â
NU rookies
Kendall Currence and
Alexis Hill played key roles during the Huskies' victory. Currence shot three-for-five from downtown en route to finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds while Hill yielded seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Â
Northeastern blitzed UNCW (16-11, 9-7 CAA) during the opening quarter, which ended with the Huskies leading comfortably, 18-5. NU limited the Seahawks to 22 percent shooting while benefitting from its 12-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
Â
Genco's 3-point basket at the 6:48 mark of the second quarter put the Huskies ahead, 31-12, simultaneously sending UNCW into its second called timeout of the first half. Northeastern steamrolled to as high as a 27-point lead, ultimately carrying the 46-21 edge into the locker room.
Â
The Huskies finished the night flaunting the +16 margin in total rebounds – their largest such advantage since the team's +18 difference on Dec. 22 against Maine.
Â
Chinyere Bell and GiGi Smith co-led UNCW with 11 points apiece. Bell added six rebounds and four assists.
