NEWARK, Del. – Despite matching up well against the No. 2 seed in the 2019 CAA tournament on Friday, the sixth-seeded Northeastern women's basketball team lost its thrilling semifinal game against second-seeded Drexel at Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center, exiting the event upon receiving the 73-69, overtime loss from the Dragons.
Â
Like during Thursday's quarterfinal win, Northeastern (20-11) witnessed four of its players and three starters finish their scoring in double figures.
Ayanna Dublin led the bunch with 16 points while
Gabby Giacone,
Jess Genco and
Alexis Hill finished with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Giacone hounded the glass for 11 rebounds, earning her seventh double-double of the season while becoming the program's seventh player to join the Huskies' 1,000-point and 700-rebound club.
Â
Northeastern challenged Drexel (24-7) for the entirety of the game's 45 minutes, locking down on the defensive end to keep the Dragons within range. After NU had conceded a basket to Niki Metzel on its first defensive possession, the Huskies kept Drexel off the scoreboard for almost five and half minutes of the first quarter, later closing the period on the 8-2 scoring run to take the 15-9 lead at the horn.
Â
Both the Huskies and the Dragons battled sub-40 percent shooting percentages during the first half, playing to the 23-23 tie before heading into the locker room.
Â
Northeastern remained on Drexel's heels as the second half progressed.
Shannon Todd hit a clutch 3-pointer to put the Huskies ahead, 40-35, with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter while NU managed to carry a four-point lead (45-41) into the fourth quarter.
Â
After arriving at 54-54 – the game's 11th tied score – with 1:27 left in regulation, Northeastern had an opportunity to win the game during its final possession with the shot clock turned off. Departing a called timeout with 5.5 seconds to go, Todd was in position to hit the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired, despite missing her mark as the game advanced into overtime.
Â
Drexel opened the extra period with the 8-2 scoring run, creating enough separation to hold for the remainder of the game. Resiliently, the Huskies trimmed the Dragons' lead to as close as three points (72-69) with less than 10 seconds to go, but ultimately succumbed to Drexel's 13-for-14 free throw clip during overtime.
