BROOKLINE, Mass. – Receiving a shutout pitching performance during game one and timely hitting during game two, the Northeastern baseball team won twice on Saturday during its 2019 debut at Friedman Diamond, sweeping its seven-inning and nine-inning doubleheader against Holy Cross, 1-0 and 6-3.

With the victories, Northeastern (8-9) has started the year 3-0 against New England opponents, having edged Hartford, 9-8, on March 13 at Fiondella Field. The Huskies did not commit an error during their 16 defensive innings against Holy Cross (1-17), narrowly outhitting the Crusaders by the combined, 11-7 margin.

GAME ONE
Junior left-hander Sean Mellen recorded a season high, 11 strikeouts, across six innings before senior closer Andrew Misiaszek stamped his name on the three-out save that capped Northeastern's 1-0, seven-inning shutout.

Mellen struck out seven of the first 10 Holy Cross batters he faced, working himself out of a bases-loaded jam during the fourth inning while scattering Alex Volpi's ground-rule double that had opened the fifth inning. The NU ace fired 97 pitches before Misiaszek took the keys during the seventh inning, striking out two batters to convert his fifth save of the season.

Northeastern threatened for a first-inning run when Ian Fair followed Scott Holzwasser's hit-by-pitch with a single through the right side that put runners on the corners. However, the Huskies endured a cold spell at the plate, waiting until the fifth inning to gain their next base runner.

Locked in a scoreless affair, Northeastern rallied for the game's lone run during the bottom of the sixth inning. With Kyle Peterson on first base, Scott Holzwasser's bunt single induced an errant throw from Declan Cronin that allowed Peterson to move 90 feet away as the go-ahead run. Fair followed with a slow grounder to the right side that was placed well enough to score Peterson as NU took the late, 1-0 lead.

GAME TWO
Scoring four two-out runs, Northeastern benefited from a stronger offensive effort to win Saturday's finale, 6-3.

Rookie infielder Jared Dupere plated two of the Huskies' first three runs of the ballgame, registering a pair of two-out RBI singles during the first and third innings.

After Holy Cross had driven in two runs to take the 2-1 lead during the top of the third inning, Northeastern answered with an immediate two-run inning of its own. With Scott Holzwasser aboard at second base following a walk and a stolen base, Corey DiLoreto shuttled his RBI single through the left side, knotting the game at 2-2 before Dupere put the Huskies in front for the remainder of the contest.

Consecutive Holy Cross errors at the start of the fifth inning prompted two unearned NU runs to come home. Jake Rosen capped the rally with his RBI triple that sailed through the alley in right center, raising the Huskies' lead to 5-2.

Tom Githens struck out five batters and walked none across his career-long, six-inning start. The right-hander left room for Josh Winkler to pick up the three-inning save as Winkler went on to seal the win, surrendering one run on one hit.
