BROOKLINE, Mass. – With five of its pitchers combining to yield 12 strikeouts, the Northeastern baseball team managed to outduel Boston College on Tuesday at Friedman Diamond, marking a 4-2 victory during the latest chapter of the two teams' storied, 97-year history.
Â
Making his first collegiate start since the 2018 CAA championship round,Â
Kyle Murphy posted three scoreless frames for Northeastern (10-10), which will enter its conference-opening series at William & Mary this weekend having won four of its last five games. Murphy limited Boston College (10-9) to one hit and struck out four batters en route to picking up the winning decision via pitch count.
Â
Corey DiLoreto drove in the game's first run as the Huskies' first-inning cleanup hitter. AfterÂ
Jake Farrell had lifted a two-out single into left field, DiLoreto brought him home, pelting his team leading, third triple through the alley in right center to register his 16th RBI of the year.
Jeff Costello's second-inning leadoff single helped the Huskies jump out to the 2-0 advantage against BC starter Joe Mancini. Costello moved into scoring position by claiming Northeastern's first of three stolen bases during the afternoon, later scoring duringÂ
Michael Geaslen's RBI single through the right side.
Farrell had the immediate answer for Sal Frelick's fifth-inning RBI single as the Huskies and the Eagles traded solitary runs. The NU senior connected on the latter of back-to-back doubles featuring he andÂ
Ian Fair, widening Northeastern's midgame lead to 3-1.
Â
Boston College threatened to undo the Huskies' two-run lead during the eighth inning.
Â
Jake Alu doubled and wound up scoring againstÂ
Brian Rodriguez, who was swapped for closerÂ
Andrew Misiaszek with four outs left to be claimed. Upon entering, Misiaszek surrendered a first-pitch double to Peter Burns that put the BC tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, but recovered to strikeout Joe Suozzi to end the BC threat.
Â
Kyle Peterson gifted Northeastern an eighth-inning insurance run with his RBI single before Misiaszek shut down the Eagles during the ninth inning, firing three more strikeouts to collect his sixth save of the season.
