WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
Ian Fair's three-run, inside-the-park home run during the top of the ninth inning on Friday provided the Northeastern baseball team with the late-game heroics it needed to win its CAA opener against William & Mary as the Huskies stunned the Tribe, 7-6, at Plumeri Park.
Northeastern (11-10, 1-0 CAA) entered the ninth inning trailing, 5-4, before the Huskies caught lightning in a bottle, spoiling Chris Farrell's bid at the six-out save.
Kyle Peterson and
Jake Rosen both reached base with one out to keep the NU hopes alive before
Scott Holzwasser's fielder's choice erased Rosen at second base, presenting the Huskies with runners at the corners.
With two outs, Fair muscled Farrell's two-strike delivery off the wall in right center, where it ricocheted away from the Tribe's converging outfielders. Fair never slowed while sprinting around the bases, sliding around the play at the plate to put Northeastern in front, 7-5.
Andrew Misiaszek relieved
Sam Jacobsak to protect the Huskies' two-run lead, stranding the potential winning run at first base despite surrendering an RBI single to Zach Pearson. Misiaszek's seventh save of the year locked in the first win of the season for Jacobsak, who retired each of the nine batters he faced in relief.
Corey DiLoreto led Northeastern at the plate, going three-for-four while scoring two runs. DiLoreto doubled during the fourth inning and later scored on
Jeff Costello's RBI single that tied the game at the time (3-3).
The Huskies combined to swing six extra-base hits during Friday's win. Prior to his homer, Fair hit a leadoff double during the sixth-inning that led to NU taking the 4-3 lead while
Cam Walsh also belted a triple and a double.
Tom Githens received the start for Northeastern, striking out four batters and walking none across two innings of work.
Pearson led William & Mary with three hits, including his first-inning triple that prompted the Tribe's two-run rally.
