BOSTON -- For the third time in team history and the second time since 2016, the Northeastern men's hockey team is the king of Hockey East after defeating Boston College 3-2 on Saturday night at TD Garden in a rematch of this year's Beanpot Championship.

Just like in the Beanpot, sophomore goaltender Cayden Primeau showed out for the Huskies, stopping 38 shots as he was awarded the William Flynn Award as the Most Valuable Player of the Hockey East tournament. Primeau joins former Northeastern goaltender Bruce Racine (1988) as the second player to receive the award in team history.

Northeastern will learn its NCAA fate on Sunday night when the field of 16 is revealed at 7 p.m. on ESPNU and NCAA.com.

Boston College almost jumped out to a lead less than a minute into the game, but after a review it was ruled the puck was hit into the net by a BC hand, negating the goal. The Huskies responded almost immediately, as junior Matt Filipe snuck a shot past BC goaltender Joseph Woll just 2:31 in after Brandon Hawkins ricocheted the puck off the side of the net.

Hawkins added a goal of his own two and a half minutes later, picking up the rebound off a Ryan Shea shot before spinning around and sniping the puck into the bottom-right corner.
At the tail end of a brilliant power play in which the puck never left the BC zone, Hawkins ripped a one-timer from the slot past Woll off a feed from fellow senior Liam Pecararo, recording his third point of the period and extending the Husky lead to 3-0 with 8:45 to play in the first frame. Hawkins is the first player since current Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau to record two goals in the opening period of a Hockey East championship game.

The Eagles came out hot in the second period, converting two early power play opportunities into goals. Oliver Wahlstrom netted just 18 seconds into frame before David Cotton converted BC's second at the 18:03 mark. BC continued to press throughout the period, but 16 saves from Primeau maintained the Husky lead at 3-2 heading into the third.

Primeau stopped all 14 shots he faced in a scoreless third period, icing the game for the Huskies as they held on for the 3-2 victory.

Northeastern nearly swept the All-Tournament team awards, earning five of the six spots on the team. Primeau, defenders Jeremy Davies and Ryan Shea, and forwards Hawkins and Zach Solow joined BC forward David Cotton as members of the All-Tournament squad.
