RICHMOND, Va. – After batting .429, slugging .842 and swinging a game-winning, inside-the-park home run during the Northeastern baseball team's 3-1 week against top competition, redshirt-sophomore
Ian Fair has been named the CAA Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
As the Huskies' designated hitter, Fair hit safely during each of his four starts through the week, proudly extending his hitting streak to five consecutive games. The Walpole, Massachusetts, native led the NU lineup with four extra-base hits (two doubles, two home runs), scoring four runs and stealing a base while earning six RBIs.
Fair's lone hit on Tuesday against Boston College was vital to the Huskies' 4-2 rivalry victory. After BC had halved Northeastern's lead to 2-1 during the fifth inning, Fair drove a two-out double to right field, crossing the plate two pitches later on
Jake Farrell's RBI double that allowed the Huskies to regain their two-run midgame advantage.
During Friday's conference opener at William & Mary, Fair came through in the clutch for Northeastern, which trailed the Tribe, 5-4, during the top of the ninth inning with two outs and runners on the corners.
Down to his final strike, Fair powered a fly ball off the wall in right center, circling the bases for the go-ahead, inside-the-park home run as the ball escaped the Tribe's converging outfielders. His three-run swing put the Huskies in front, 7-5, as NU went on to steal the 7-6 league victory.
Fair closed the weekend with two more multi-hit performances, hitting .500 during the three-game series against William & Mary while helping Northeastern start 2-1 during CAA play. On Sunday, he vaulted the Huskies into the lead during the third inning, powering a solo homer to right field to break the game's 1-1 tie.
Since making his 2019 debut on March 2, Fair has led the Huskies in batting average (.355), slugging percentage (.597) and RBIs (16). The 2018 CAA Co-Rookie of the Year has also hit safely during 13 of his 16 appearances this season, logging eight multi-hit games.
Fair and Northeastern are back in action at Friedman Diamond on Wednesday, March 27, when the Huskies will host Rhode Island. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
