BOSTON -- Northeastern is back in the NCAA tournament for the third time in the last four years, and seventh overall. It's the first time in team history that the Huskies reached NCAAs in consecutive seasons. Northeastern is the 14th team to win both the Beanpot and Hockey East in the same season. Of the previous 13, six of those teams went on to win the national championship.

Back to the Dance
Northeastern is returning to the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in team history, and third time in the last four seasons. The Huskies earned an automatic berth to the tournament after capturing the Hockey East title last weekend. It's also the first time in team history that Northeastern has reached the NCAA in back-to-back years.

The Huskies are 3-6-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament, which includes a run to the Frozen Four in 1982.

Saturday vs. Cornell is a rematch of the 2009 NCAA first round matchup, a 3-2 win for the Big Red.

NU connections to the NCAA tournament
Fernie Flaman Men's Hockey Coach Jim Madigan is the only coach in program history to take three Northeastern teams to the NCAA tournament.

Madigan was a freshman on the 1982 Frozen Four team and an assistant coach on the 1988 team.

Director of operations Mike McLaughlin was a freshman on Northeastern's 2009 team, which lost to Cornell in Grand Rapids, Mich., and has served in his current role for the Huskies' trips to the NCAAs in 2016, 2018 and 2019.

Junior Matt Filipe and his father, Paul, are Northeastern's only father-son duo to both reach the NCAA tournament. Paul played with Madigan on the 1981-82 team. The Filipe family is also Northeastern's only father-son duo to both win the Beanpot.

All they do is win
Northeastern enters Saturday with 27 wins of the season, the most victories in single-season history, breaking the record of 25 held by the 2008-09 and 1981-82 teams.

The Huskies are one of four teams in the NCAA with at least 27 wins this season. It's the first time in team history that NU has won at least 20 games in consecutive seasons.

NU enters the weekend 9-1-0 in its last 10 games, tied with Minnesota State for the best record among NCAA teams entering the tournament.

Trophy season
The Huskies enter the national tournament after capturing the Hockey East championship for the second time in four seasons last weekend, and third time in team history.

The win last weekend also marked the 14th time in history that a team has won both the Beanpot and the Hockey East crown in the same season (Boston Univ. - seven times; Boston College - five times; Northeastern - 1988 and 2019).

Of the previous 13, six went on to win the NCAA title (BC in 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2001; BU in 2009 and 1995), while three others reached the national title game). Teams that have won the Beanpot and HEA title in the same year are 32-8 in the NCAA tournament.

Of the previous 34 Hockey East champions, 22 reached the Frozen Four, 16 reached the championship game and seven won the national title.

Winningest class in Northeastern history
Northeastern's senior class has helped lead Northeastern to 90 victories, making them the winningest class in team history. They've also helped the Huskies to two Hockey East titles (2016, 2019), three NCAA appearances (2016, 2018, 2019) and back-to-back Beanpots (2018, 2019).

Cardiac canines
Zach Solow's game-winner on Mar. 22 was Northeastern's sixth overtime victory of the season, the most since 2007-08. Tyler Madden (two), Patrick Schule and Austin Goldstein have also scored in OT this season for Northeastern. NU is the only team in the NCAA with at least six overtime wins this season.

Since 2012-13, only four other teams have won at least five games in OT. Three of them went to the Frozen Four: Minnesota Duluth (2016-17; national runner-up), Boston University (2014-15; national runner-up), and Yale (2012-13; won national title).

Since the 2012-13 season, Madden is one of just two rookies in the NCAA to score at least two overtime goals in a season, joining BU's Jack Eichel during his Hobey Baker winning season in 2014-15.

Before Solow and Madden, the last Husky to score two overtime goals in a season was Vinny Saponari in 2011-12.

Road warriors
Northeastern is 15-5-0 away from home this season, a .750 winning percentage that is the second highest in the NCAA. NU is outscoring opponents 63-38 on the road, which is the sixth lowest goals against total in the country. The PK is also operating at 86.2% away from home.

Since 2002-03, the Huskies have only reached double-digit wins away from home three other times: 2015-16 (12), 2013-14 (12), 2008-09 (13).

Five of Northeastern's six shutouts this season have also come on the road.

Primeau named Richter Award finalist
For the second straight year, Hockey East First Team All-Star Cayden Primeau has been named a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA Division Men's Ice Hockey.

Primeau has put together a stellar sophomore campaign, posting a record of 25-9-1 between the pipes, tied for second-most wins in the nation. His 2.00 GAA and .936 save percentage rank sixth and first in the nation, respectively, among goaltenders with at least 30 starts this season.

His 25 victories are also tied for the most on Northeastern's single-season goaltending wins list.

The win vs. UNH on Mar. 8 was the 40th of his young career: he's the only player in program history to win at least 40 games in two seasons or fewer. After just 67 starts, Primeau is already tied for fifth in career wins (44), and is third on Northeastern's all-time shutouts list (eight).

In March, he's 6-1-0 with a .964 save perc. (first in the NCAA) and 1.24 GAA (fourth in the NCAA).

Tight quarters
The Huskies have been comfortable playing in tight games this season. Northeastern is 14-3-0 in one-goal games, the most one-goal wins in team history and the most in the NCAA this season.

Before Northeastern's two wins against Merrimack earlier this season, NU had won four straight one-goal games, the longest such streak in team history. Before that, Northeastern had won three straight one-goal games just four times in team history, the last coming during the 2007-08 season.
