All-Rookie Team Announcement
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Hockey East regular season champion Northeastern women's hockey team was well-represented on the league's postseason honor roll as head coach
Dave Flint was named the Hockey East Coach of the Year, sophomore
Aerin Frankel was named the BW Windjammer Goaltender of the Year, and freshman
Alina Mueller was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year, as announced Friday at the annual postseason awards banquet.
In addition, Frankel, Mueller and sophomore
Skylar Fontaine were named First Team Hockey East All-Stars, sophomore
Brooke Hobson was honored as a Second Team All-Star, senior
Kasidy Anderson was tabbed a Third Team All-Star, and sophomore
Veronika Pettey was selected as an Honorable Mention All-Star.
Flint collected Coach of the Year honors after leading the No. 3 Huskies to the program's second Hockey East regular season title and first since 2012. Under Flint's guidance, Northeastern set new program records for most wins in WHEA play (21) and most points during a WHEA season (45), while posting the fewest losses (5) in a regular season since 1997-98. Flint was previously named the Hockey East Co-Coach of the Year in 2011-12.
Frankel is the third Northeastern netminder to earn WHEA Goaltender of the Year accolades, joining Chanda Gunn (2003-04) and Florence Schelling (2011-12). In 19 league games this season, Frankel led all WHEA netminders with a 1.59 goals against average, a .938 save percentage, and a .917 winning percentage. Frankel's 16 WHEA wins set a new single-season program record, surpassing the previous mark of 15 WHEA wins in a season set by Schelling (2011-12) and
Brittany Bugalski (2015-16).
In 26 total appearances, Frankel owns a 1.77 GAA (seventh in the NCAA), a .933 save percentage (10th in the NCAA), an .820 winning percentage (fourth in the NCAA), and six shutouts (second in the NCAA). With a 19-3-3 overall record, Frankel needs just one more win to become the ninth netminder in program history to win at least 20 games in a season.
After being tabbed a unanimous All-Rookie Team selection on Wednesday, Mueller was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year – and a unanimous First Team All-Star – on Friday to become the second player in program history (
Kendall Coyne in 2011-12) to earn Rookie of the Year honors. The only freshman to be named a First Team All-Star, Mueller leads all WHEA first-year players in goals (19), assists (30), points (49), power-play points (14), game-winning goals (5), plus/minus (+32), shots on goal (125) and faceoff wins (342).
With 49 points in her first collegiate season, Mueller ranks second on Northeastern's all-time rookie scoring leaderboard, trailing only Vicky Sunohara, who put up 74 points in just 25 games during her freshman campaign in 1988-89. Mueller has notched at least a point in 30 of 35 games this season – including at least a point in all 10 games against ranked opponents – and became the program's first-ever freshman to be honored as a Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist when the announcement was made on Feb. 21.
Skylar Fontaine's breakout sophomore campaign did not go unnoticed by the league as she joined Frankel and Mueller as First Team WHEA All-Stars, giving Northeastern three First Team selections for the first time in program history. A unanimous First Team choice, the East Greenwich, Rhode Island native is one of only three defenders in the nation with 11 or more goals, while her 32 points rank third nationally among blue-liners and represent the highest total for any NU defender since Kim Greene's 41 points in 2001-02.
Fontaine's defense partner,
Brooke Hobson, earned Second Team All-Star status following a breakout sophomore campaign of her own. Through 35 games, Hobson has racked up 26 points on six goals and 20 assists. Hobson's 10 power-play assists are tied for the fourth-most in the NCAA among defenders this season.
With a team-high 20 goals this season,
Kasidy Anderson was rewarded with Third Team All-Star accolades. The Shaker Heights, Ohio native hit the 100-point plateau for her career with the only goal in the series clincher vs. Vermont last weekend to become the 30th player in program history to reach the century mark. Anderson is also one of only five WHEA skaters to score at least 20 goals this season.
After earning Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors last year,
Veronika Pettey ascended to Honorable Mention All-Star status in 2018-19. Pettey ranks third on the team with 17 goals and is tied for the league lead and ranks second nationally with seven power-play goals. Pettey has scored eight goals in her last 11 games entering the Hockey East Championship weekend.
