WILMINGTON, N.C. – Erasing its 3-0 deficit with its three-run seventh inning on Saturday, the Northeastern baseball team was in prime position to steal a road victory during the late innings against UNCW, despite the Huskies succumbing to Kep Brown's eighth-inning, RBI single as the Seahawks prevailed, 4-3, at Brooks Field.

Sean Mellen struck out nine batters and fired a season high, 117 pitches, across eight innings for Northeastern (16-18, 6-5 CAA), notching the program's first complete game since Feb. 2016 (Dustin Hunt). Mellen faced no more than four batters during six of his eight innings on the mound but was charged with three earned runs, experiencing his first defeat of the 2019 season (4-1).

After stranding two runners in scoring position during the top of the second inning, the Huskies forfeited the game's first runs to UNCW (20-16, 5-3 CAA) during the bottom of the third inning. Greg Jones single-handedly created the Seahawks' three two-out runs, dropping a two-RBI double into left field before stealing third base and scoring as a result of John Mazza's errant throw to beat him to the bag.

Northeastern succeeded in putting its leadoff batter aboard during five of its first eight offensive innings but was only able to cash in during the seventh inning.

With Jake Rosen and Ryan Solomon both in scoring position, Scott Holzwasser directed a two-RBI single through the left side, reducing the UNCW lead to 3-2. After the Seahawks had retrieved Blake Deatherage out of their bullpen, Ian Fair guided a misjudged ball past the diving UNCW right fielder, tying the game with his stand-up, RBI triple.

The Seahawks caught a fortunate break to open the eighth inning as Noah Bridges's bunted pop-up caused a three-way collision between Solomon, Mellen and Michael Geaslen, resulting in a shallow infield single. Meadows delivered the sacrifice bunt that moved Bridges into scoring position, from where he came home two batters later via Brown's go-ahead, RBI single.

The Huskies were unable to produce a base runner against UNCW's closer, Breydan Gorham, who earned his second save of the season.
