Northeastern celebrates record breaking season at year-end banquet

BOSTON -- The Northeastern men's hockey team celebrated its historic 2018-19 season on Wednesday night at the team's annual banquet at Matthews Arena. The Huskies handed out several awards and enjoyed memories of Northeastern's second straight Beanpot title, second Hockey East title in the last four years, and the program's third trip to the NCAA tournament in the last four seasons.

Expected by many to be a rebuilding year on Huntington Avenue, the Huskies responded with a record-breaking season in 2018-19. The team finished the year 27-11-1, good for the most victories in single-season history, becoming the 14th team to ever win both the Beanpot and the Hockey East championship in the same season.

Northeastern also honored seniors Eric WilliamsLincoln GriffinPatrick SchuleRyan RuckAustin PlevyBrandon Hawkins and Liam Pecararo on Wednesday. The core group of Williams, Griffin, Schule and Ruck began their careers 1-11-2 before ending as the winningest class in Northeastern history (90 wins), winning back-to-back Beanpots, two Hockey East crowns and appearing in the NCAA tournament three times.

At the conclusion of the banquet, Fernie Flaman Men's Hockey Coach Jim Madigan announced that Ryan Shea would serve as the team captain in 2019-20, while Matt Filipe, John Picking and Zach Solow would serve as assistant captains.

Sophomore goaltender Cayden Primeau was named the team's Most Valuable Player after putting together one of the most outstanding individual seasons in team history. Primeau's sophomore campaign was nothing short of extraordinary, as he posted a .933 save percentage that ranked fifth in the nation and a 2.09 goals against average. His save percentage is the best single-season mark in Northeastern history, and his GAA ranks second behind only his 1.92 average from last season. He posted a 25-10-1 record, the third most wins in the NCAA and tied for the most in a season in program history.

Along the way, Primeau was named a Hobey Baker Candidate, First Team All-American, Hockey East Tournament MVP, Hockey East All-Tournament Team honoree, Hockey East First Team All-Star, Beanpot MVP, Eberly Award winner, and the Stop It Goaltender of the Year before winning the Mike Richter Award last week as the most outstanding goaltender in the NCAA this season. He is the first Husky to ever win the award.

Junior Jeremy Davies was the leading scorer on this year's team as a defenseman, the first time that's happened at Northeastern since Jim Fahey in 2001-02. His eight goals and 28 assists were good for sixth in the NCAA in points from defensemen, and he was also a Hobey Baker candidate, Second Team All-American, the HCA National Player of the Month in February, a Hockey East First Team All-Star and named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team. Earlier in the season, he became the first Northeastern blueliner since Dan McGillis (1994-95, 1995-96) to record 30 points in consecutive seasons.

Davies was also given the Huskies Radio Award as the team's most exciting player.

Freshman Tyler Madden earned the Ed Arrington Memorial Rookie of the Year award for his stellar play throughout the season for the Huskies in his first season on Huntington Ave. A Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, Madden finished the year tied for seventh in the NCAA among freshmen with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists), with two of his biggest goals coming in overtime against No. 1 Massachusetts and against Boston University in the Beanpot semifinal. He's the ninth Husky since 2002 to reach 25 points as a rookie.

Senior Patrick Schule was named the Manager's Award winner as the team's most improved player. Schule, coming off a nine-point season a year ago, set or tied career highs in goals, assists, points and plus-minus with 10 goals and six assists as a senior.

Fellow senior Lincoln Griffin was named the team's unsung hero. Having missed just two games in his collegiate career, Griffin was a mainstay for the Huskies in 2018-19. He also set new career-highs for goals (seven), assists (14) and points (21), while leading all forwards with a +20 rating and blocking 33 shots. He also scored the eventual game-winning goal against Boston College in the Beanpot title game.

Not to be outdone, captain Eric Williams was named the Don McKenney Coaches Award winner. Williams never missed a game as a Husky, setting team records for both overall games played and consecutive games played at 156. Williams is also the winningest player in team history, having been on the ice for 90 victories during his career. This season, Williams posted three goals and nine assists and was fourth on the team with 51 blocks.

David Fraizer is the 2018 recipient of the Fernie Flaman Award, presented to a benefactor of the program who has demonstrated the commitment and dedication of Coach Flaman to making Northeastern hockey a success. A member of the university for more than 20 years, Fraizer is currently the director of athletic facilities and event services, and has been a longtime friend of the men's hockey program and all teams at Northeastern.
