BROOKLINE, Mass. – Firing 105 pitches, junior right-hander
David Stiehl notched the first complete game of his collegiate career on Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond as he and the Northeastern baseball team shut out College of Charleston, 7-0, to win the opening game of the teams' three-game weekend series.
Stiehl collected 16 outs from the first 16 batters he faced, retiring 10 in a row before an infield error cost him his perfect game bid during the fourth inning. The six-foot righty kept the visitors hitless through five and one-third innings, settling for a three-hit performance that featured six strikeouts and no walks.
Northeastern (18-19, 8-5 CAA) provided Stiehl with offensive support during the second inning, when the Huskies knocked three straight two-out hits against the Cougars' ace, Griffin McLarty. Facing a 1-2 count,
Jake Rosen delivered his third triple of the season to the wall in right center, scoring during
Ryan Solomon's ensuing RBI single that flared its way into shallow left field.
Unable to rally behind
Michael Geaslen's fifth-inning double, Northeastern did McLarty in for another trio of two-out hits during the sixth inning. With
Corey DiLoreto aboard at first base,
Jeff Costello pounded a ground-rule double to right center before Rosen connected on a two-RBI double that put NU ahead, 3-0.
The Huskies tacked on four insurance runs during the eighth inning that provided enough breathing room for Stiehl to finish his complete game effort.
Jake Farrell crushed a two-run home run over the right field bleachers for his fifth jack of the season while an untimely wild pitch by Kris Kuhn pushed Costello and DiLoreto into scoring position with no outs, leading to two more NU runs.
College of Charleston (24-14, 7-3 CAA) achieved its best scoring chance during the sixth inning when Stiehl's balk allowed Chris Graham to take second base after his one-out single. Graham advanced as far as third base before Stiehl's swinging strikeout of Dupree Hart resulted in the inning-ending interference call in the batter's box.
Stiehl's outing ranks as the longest of his collegiate career in terms of both innings pitched (nine) and pitches thrown (105). He had previously recorded two seven-inning shutout performances against NYIT (April 22, 2017) and UMass Lowell (May 1, 2018) – both at Friedman Diamond.
