BROOKLINE, Mass. – Despite Sean Mellen's 10-strikeout performance on Saturday, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to supply its left-handed ace with the victory as the Huskies surrendered the second game of the weekend to College of Charleston, 7-5, at Friedman Diamond.

Mellen scattered six hits and allowed two runs across his six-inning start, departing at the start of the seventh inning while in line for his fifth win of the season. The NU southpaw notched double-digit strikeouts for the third time this year and fifth time during his collegiate career, elevating his 2019 strikeout total to 77 through 10 appearances – all starts.

Northeastern (18-20, 8-6 CAA) scored early and often against College of Charleston (25-14, 8-3 CAA), building the 5-1 advantage through four innings.

The Huskies cashed in for two quick runs during the opening inning, receiving three successive base hits from Ian Fair, Jake Farrell and Corey DiLoreto. Two innings later, the same Northeastern trio again reached safely during consecutive leadoff plate appearances, setting the table for Jeff Costello's RBI hit-by-pitch before Jake Rosen's double-play ball put NU ahead, 4-0.

Scott Holzwasser matched the Cougars' fourth-inning run with his solo homer that received a helpful boost over the outfield wall from the howling Friedman Diamond wind. Logan McRae answered with a similar wind-aided home run during the fifth inning, keeping the visitors within range at 5-2.

Charleston closed the Huskies' lead to 5-3 during the seventh inning upon swinging three straight singles against Josh Winkler, who was swapped for Andrew Misiaszek midway through the eighth inning with the game's tying runs aboard. Squaring to bunt, Chris Graham drew the hit-by-pitch that loaded the bases for the Cougars, who took their first lead courtesy of Bradley Dixon's bases-clearing triple into the right field corner.

Dupree Hart followed with an insurance RBI single before Charleston's bullpen picked up the final six outs from the last seven NU batters it faced.

Jake Farrell went three-for-five for Northeastern while Kyle Peterson went two-for-four out of the ninth spot in the Huskies' lineup.
