Jerry Keefe named to USA Hockey’s World Junior Championship staff

BOSTON -- Northeastern men's ice hockey associate head coach Jerry Keefe has once again been named an assistant coach for the United States National Junior Team for the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.

Keefe will join head coach Scott Sandelin (Minnesota Duluth) and fellow assistants Steve Miller (Ohio State), David Lassonde (Dartmouth), and Brett Larson (St. Cloud State) on Team USA's staff.

Keefe, along with Northeastern players Tyler Madden and Cayden Primeau, also joined the team for the 2019 competition as an assistant coach. Team USA finished with a 5-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record as they took home the silver medal, falling 3-2 to Finland in the gold medal game.

Keefe oversaw Team USA's power play during tournament play, a unit that went 25.93% (7-of-27) and was good for second among all teams behind only the Czech Republic.

Keefe was an integral part of one of the greatest seasons in Northeastern history in 2018-19, helping them to a 27-11-1 record, the most single-season wins in program history. The Huskies won the Beanpot for the second straight year, and took home their second-ever Hockey East Championship. They were consistently ranked within the top 15 teams in the nation, and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years with their victory in the Hockey East title game. Cayden Primeau was named a First Team All-American and the Mike Richter Award winner while posting the best save percentage (.933) and t-most wins (25) in program history, and Jeremy Davies was named a Second Team All-American after leading the team in points (36).

The 2018-19 campaign was Keefe's eighth season at Northeastern and fifth as associate head coach. Since joining the Huskies as an assistant coach in 2011-12, Keefe has been instrumental in Northeastern's notable successes that include the program's first two Hockey East Championships (2015-16, 2016-17) and first two Beanpot titles (2017-18, 2018-19) since 1988, as well as the first Hobey Baker Award winner in team history (Adam Gaudette in 2018).

Keefe oversees the Huskies' power play unit and holds a significant role in Northeastern's recruiting process, including the recruitment of Hobey Baker Award winner Gaudette, All-Americans Kevin Roy, Zach Aston-Reese, Dylan Sikura, Jeremy Davies, and Cayden Primeau, and current Edmonton Oilers defenseman Matt Benning. He was also at the forefront of the recruitment of Northeastern's current NHL draft picks Matt Filipe (Carolina), Ryan Shea (Chicago), Jordan Harris (Montreal) and Tyler Madden (Vancouver).

The United States enters the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship having medaled in four straight World Junior Championships for the first time in U.S. history after earning gold in 2017, silver in 2019, and bronze in 2018 and 2016. To date, the U.S. National Junior Team has claimed 12 medals, including four gold medals (2017, 2013, 2010, 2004), two silver medals (1997, 2019) and six bronze medals (2018, 2016, 2011, 2007, 1992, 1986).
