ELON, N.C. – Despite vaulting in front of Elon, 5-2, with its five-run fourth inning on Friday, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to sustain its midgame lead as the Huskies lost their series opener against the Phoenix, 6-5, at Latham Park.

Forcing Elon's ace, Kyle Brnovich, into throwing 64 pitches across the game's opening three innings, Northeastern (18-22, 8-8 CAA) did the CAA Preseason Player of the Year in for five earned runs during the fourth inning to flip its 2-0 deficit into a three-run advantage.

After Jeff Costello and Jake Rosen had reached via consecutive leadoff walks (nine pitches), Michael Geaslen poked the Huskies' hit-and-run ball through the right side of the infield for an RBI single. Kyle Peterson proceeded to drop the RBI bunt that scored Rosen from third base, leveling the game at 2-2 before Scott Holzwasser capped the NU rally by sending a monster three-run home run over the doubled left field wall.

Elon (25-18, 14-2 CAA) caught up to Northeastern during the fifth inning, when the Phoenix used three consecutive RBI hits against David Stiehl to knot the game at 5-5. Nick Cicci started the two-out rally with his RBI double that scored Joe Satterfield, preluding Adam Spurlin and Jarrett Pico's RBI singles.

Anthony Galason opened the sixth inning with a double against Sam Jacobsak, advancing via a pair of infield ground balls – the latter of which ricocheted off Jacobsak's ankle for the unconventional 1-5-3, RBI putout.

Northeastern put two runners aboard during the seventh and ninth innings, despite being unable to bring home the game's tying run. Jake Farrell doubled during the seventh inning prior to Elon turning the inning-ending, 5-3 double play while Corey DiLoreto ended the game with a flyout to left field with NU runners at first and second base.

Brnovich struck out 13 Northeastern batters, firing 129 pitches.
