ELON, N.C. – With two of the top starting pitchers in the CAA toeing the rubber against each other on Saturday, the Northeastern baseball team matched Elon at two runs apiece through seven innings, despite the Phoenix rallying for two eighth-inning runs to defeat the Huskies, 4-2, at Latham Park.

Entering the weekend as the CAA leader in strikeouts, Sean Mellen struck out six batters and walked two across seven innings of work for Northeastern (18-23, 8-9 CAA), scattering five hits while being charged with a season high, four earned runs.

Opposing the Huskies, George Kirby matched Mellen's length on the mound, registering eight strikeouts while surrendering two unearned runs and five hits. Kirby struck out seven of the first 10 NU batters he faced, limiting the Huskies to five hits despite not earning the decision.

Elon (26-18, 15-2 CAA) jumped out to the 2-0 lead during the second inning in the wake of Cam Devanney's leadoff single, which errantly rolled under the glove of Corey DiLoreto in left field. After Nick Cicci had connected on an RBI single to left field, John Mazza threw Cicci out at second base, wiping the bases clean before Adam Spurlin hit a solo home run to center field.

Northeastern capitalized on Elon's poor defending during the fifth inning to plate a pair of unearned runs. Ty Adcock dropped Jake Rosen's fly ball in right field while Kirby's pickoff throw to second base brushed the glove of Spurlin on its way to the outfield, presenting the Huskies with two runners in scoring position.

Mazza then halved the NU deficit by scooting an RBI groundout to the right side before Cam Walsh lifted the game-tying single to center field.

Elon broke through for the winning runs during the eighth inning, starting with a pair of leadoff walks to Spurlin and Jarrett Pico that ended Mellen's outing. With the bases loaded and no outs, Anthony Galason hit a two-RBI single to right field, putting the Phoenix in front for the final time.

Jeff Costello went two-for-four to lead Northeastern offensively, doubling to left center to open the seventh inning.
