ELON, N.C. – With redshirt-junior right-handerÂ
Kyle Murphy delivering seven strikeouts across seven innings on Sunday, the Northeastern baseball team was in position to pick up a road win at first-place Elon, despite Jared Wetherbee firing eight scoreless innings for the Phoenix as the Huskies were defeated, 3-0, at Latham Park.
Â
Northeastern (18-24, 8-10 CAA) received a solid start from Murphy, who limited Elon (27-18, 16-2 CAA) to two runs, five hits and a walk. Murphy experienced his only hiccup during the third inning, when the Phoenix used two sacrifices to turn Anthony Galason's leadoff double into a run prior to Cam Devanney hitting a two-out, solo home run to left center field.
Â
Riding Murphy's string of 10 straight batters retired, the Huskies kept their deficit at 2-0 until the eighth inning, when the Phoenix tacked on a meaningful insurance run against
Andrew Misiaszek courtesy of Devanney's second solo homer of the day.
Â
Ian Fair accounted for two of Northeastern's four hits, singling during the fourth and sixth innings.
Â
Jake Rosen andÂ
Jake Farrell both registered two-out doubles for the Huskies, swinging for extra bases during the second and ninth innings, respectively.
Â
Wetherbee recorded five strikeouts across his eight-inning start for Elon, walking two batters and hitting one (
Scott Holzwasser) while tossing 117 pitches. Brandon Justice earned the ninth-inning save for the Phoenix.
