LOWELL, Mass. – Facing a 2-0 deficit through seven innings on Tuesday night against UMass Lowell, the Northeastern baseball team staged a three-run comeback across the game's final two innings as the Huskies stole the 3-2 victory from the River Hawks at LeLacheur Park.
Â
After surrendering solitary runs during the fourth and seventh innings, Northeastern (19-24) went to work during the top of the eighth inning.
Â
WithÂ
Jeff Costello at second base following his leadoff walk and Blaise Sclafani's wild pitch,Â
Scott Holzwasser grounded into a fielder's choice at shortstop, despite Mark Tumosa making an errant throw to third base that sent Holzwasser to second base and allowed Costello to score.
Â
OnceÂ
Jared Dupere's ground ball to the right side had moved Holzwasser up 90 feet to third base,Â
Kyle Peterson delivered the game-tying sacrifice fly to center field, takingÂ
Tyler Brown off the hook for the loss.
Â
Tied at 2-2 during the ninth inning,Â
Corey DiLoreto drew a one-out walk against Gerry Siracusa, scoring the eventual winning run as Siracusa sandwiched two wild pitches aroundÂ
Jake Rosen's infield groundout.
Â
Holzwasser accounted for Northeastern's lone hit of the game during the second inning, beating the throw from his bunted ball for an infield single. Despite the lack of hits, the Huskies received their fair share of free passes as the River Hawks' pitching staff combined to throw seven walks and seven hit-by-pitches.
Â
Brian Rodriguez struck out five batters in relief of Brown, tossing three and one-third innings while allowing three hits and a run.
Rick Burroni struck out two batters during the eighth inning whileÂ
Andrew Misiaszek collected his eighth save of the season.
Â
Ciaran Devenney went two-for-four to lead UMass Lowell (11-31), which totaled five hits against the Huskies' arms.Â
