BROOKLINE, Mass. – Finding itself in an early deficit on Friday, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to turn the table against Hofstra as the Huskies lost the weekend's series opener against the Pride, 7-1, at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Receiving the start for Northeastern (14-15, 4-3 CAA),
Tyler Brown collected two outs from the first three batters he faced before his five-pitch walk to Rob Weissheier extended the inning, bringing Patrick Quinn to the plate with a pair of runners aboard. With Brown ahead in the count, 0-2, Quinn lifted a high fly that rode the swirling wind beyond
Corey DiLoreto's outstretched glove in left field, barely dropping over the wall for the go-ahead, three-run home run.
Â
Hofstra (5-19, 1-3 CAA) added an insurance run during the second inning via Vito Frisicia's RBI hit by pitch, which ended Brown's day prematurely after one and two-thirds innings on the mound.
Â
Sam Jacobsak calmed the Pride down while in relief of Brown, allowing one unearned run across his three and one-third-inning outing, striking out five batters and walking one.
Â
Northeastern chipped into the Pride's lead during the third inning in the wake of
Jared Dupere and
Scott Holzwasser's leadoff singles.
Ian Fair drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, two batters before
Corey DiLoreto earned a second walk against Jack Jett, bringing home Dupere to cut Hofstra's lead to 4-1.
Â
Defensive errors by the Huskies' infield led to the Pride scoring their solitary runs during the fifth and eighth innings.
Â
Jimmy Joyce earned the winning decision for Hofstra, firing the game's final six and two-thirds scoreless innings while registering six strikeouts.
Â
Holzwasser accounted for two of Northeastern's seven hits while DiLoreto reached base three times, singling during the fifth inning.
