BROOKLINE, Mass. – With left-hand starter
Sean Mellen firing 12 strikeouts across seven innings and
Josh Winkler adding four more down the stretch on Saturday, the Northeastern baseball team successfully leveled its weekend series against Hofstra, scoring the 5-1 victory at Friedman Diamond.
Mellen opened his sixth quality start of the season by posting five straight scoreless innings, closing the fifth inning with a swinging strikeout of Daniel Page to bounce back from two earlier walks. The NU southpaw wound up losing his shutout bid to Vito Friscia's solo home run that led off the sixth inning – the last of the four hits that he surrendered to the Pride.
Northeastern (15-15, 5-3 CAA) gifted Mellen a 3-0 lead during the bottom of the second inning, rallying behind
Jeff Costello's leadoff double. After Costello had swiped third base and
Jake Rosen had drawn a five-pitch walk,
Ryan Solomon steered an RBI single into center field, preluding
Michael Geaslen's RBI groundout and
Kyle Peterson's RBI single.
The Huskies tacked on insurance runs during each of the next two innings to cushion their lead to 5-0.
Corey DiLoreto and
Jake Farrell were responsible for back-to-back doubles during the third inning while Solomon opened the fourth inning with another two-bagger, scoring during the next at-bat via Geaslen's RBI hack up the middle.
Winkler struck out the side during the eighth inning before stranding two runners during the ninth inning to deny Hofstra (5-20, 1-4 CAA) a look at the game's potential tying run.
Eight Northeastern batters combined to yield the Huskies' 13 hits. Geaslen went three-for-four while Costello, Rosen and Solomon each paired two hits with a stolen base.
