Kyle Murphy's seven-inning start with 12 hits on Sunday, the Northeastern baseball team capitalized on its five-run third inning to defeat Hofstra, 7-3, at Friedman Diamond and secure its third straight CAA series victory.
Northeastern (16-15, 6-3 CAA) brought nine batters to the plate during its third-inning rally that featured four hits and three walks. With the bases loaded and no outs,
Corey DiLoreto knocked in the game's first runs, lifting a two-RBI single over the second baseman to put the Huskies in front of Hofstra (5-21, 1-5 CAA) early.
Two batters later,
Jeff Costello extended the inning when his line drive pegged the legs of the Pride's starting pitcher, Ryan Rue, rolling towards the foul line for an infield single. Following Rue's substitution,
Ian Fair darted home on a wild pitch to up Northeastern's lead to 3-0 prior to the Huskies adding two runs via
Ryan Solomon's bases-loaded walk and
Michael Geaslen's sacrifice fly.
Murphy commanded the strike zone throughout his season-long start, striking out six batters and walking none while allowing five hits. The right-hander worked himself out of Hofstra's three-run fourth inning, standing the potential tying run at the plate after the Pride had managed to swing three extra-base hits.
Northeastern's pitching trio of Murphy,
David Stiehl and
Andrew Misiaszek combined to retire each of the final 14 batters that they collectively faced.
The Huskies tacked on two insurance runs late to put the game out of reach.
Jake Farrell came through with an RBI triple during the seventh inning that scored Fair while
Kyle Peterson connected on an RBI single during the eighth inning that brought home Solomon.
