SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Providing prompt responses to each of Bryant's three leads on Wednesday, the Northeastern baseball team plated three ninth-inning runs to force extra innings, where the Huskies scratched home a run during the 10th inning to defeat the Bulldogs, 7-6, at Conaty Park.
Â
Well afterÂ
Ian Fair's fifth-inning sacrifice fly had tied the game at 3-3, Northeastern (20-24) was an out away from carrying the same score into the ninth inning when Ryan Ward hit a three-run home run for Bryant (32-14).
Â
Opposing the Bulldogs' closer, Chris Wright,Â
Michael Geaslen started the Huskies' ninth-inning comeback by cracking a first-pitch single to right center. Despite Northeastern weathering a pair of pinch-hit outs, Fair kept the game alive with a single to right field beforeÂ
Jake Farrell connected on a two-RBI double that cut the Huskies' deficit to 6-5.
With Farrell at second base,Â
Jeff Costello hit a weak ground ball to the right side of the diamond that drew the Bryant defense off the bag at first. Costello beat the play for a single, but Tyler Panno's throw to first errantly traveled behind the bag, allowing Farrell to narrowly survive the Bulldogs' throw home and score the game-tying run.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek successfully shut down Bryant's bases-loaded response, leaving the door open for Northeastern to make its move during the 10th inning.
WithÂ
Scott Holzwasser andÂ
Jared Dupere both aboard, the Huskies executed a clutch double steal, setting the table forÂ
Kyle Peterson, who lifted the go-ahead sacrifice fly to center. Holzwasser tagged and darted home, leaping around the incoming throw at the plate to score the eventual winning run.
Costello went three-for-five to lead Northeastern, doubling during the eighth inning. Farrell accounted for two of the Huskies' hits, runs and RBIs, finishing with his team leading, 15th multi-hit game of the year.
Â
Bryant committed a season high, six errors. Tyler Schoff started for the Bulldogs, striking out four batters across four and two-thirds innings while surrendering three runs to the Huskies (all unearned).
Northeastern collected its first road victory against Bryant at Conaty Park since 2010.
