BROOKLINE, Mass. – Flashing the leather repeatedly during Friday's series opener against James Madison, the Northeastern baseball team successfully outdueled the Dukes as the Huskies weathered their 2-1 lead until their four eighth-inning runs prompted their 6-1 result at Friedman Diamond.

Defense reigned supreme for Northeastern (23-25, 9-10 CAA), which used the victory to pull level with James Madison (29-20, 9-10 CAA) in a tie for fourth place in the league standings. Fifth-year senior catcher Michael Geaslen denied JMU stolen bases during each of its two attempts while Jeff Costello and Corey DiLoreto robbed the Dukes of extra-base hits during the fourth and eighth innings, respectively.

Celebrating his birthday, Jake Farrell put Northeastern on top during the second inning, powering Kevin Kelly's 2-1 delivery the opposite way for a leadoff home run – his team leading, eighth of the 2019 season.

With two outs and a runner at third base during the same inning, Geaslen cracked an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Costello as the Huskies doubled their advantage to 2-0.

David Stiehl collected the first two outs of the third inning, but surrendered a run back to James Madison after two challenging infield singles. Stiehl protected Northeastern's 2-1 lead through the remainder of his outing, striking out seven batters across six and two-thirds innings while limiting the Dukes to one run and four hits.

Brandon Dufault picked up the final out of the seventh inning before the Huskies' four-run eighth inning allowed him to finish the game, earning the sophomore his second save of the season. NU produced just one eighth-inning hit, benefitting from a hit batsman, two walks and two wild pitches.

Kelly recorded four strikeouts during his start for James Madison, keeping Northeastern to four hits despite the Huskies knocking him out of the game during the fifth inning (102 pitches).
