TOWSON, Md. – Batting around during its three-run second inning on Thursday, the Northeastern baseball team established an early lead against Towson and sustained it through nine innings, defeating the Tigers, 6-4, at Schuerholz Park.
With the victory, Northeastern (25-26, 11-11 CAA) moved one win away from clinching a berth in the 2019 CAA tournament. At the time of the game's conclusion, the Huskies temporarily gained sole possession of third place in the conference standings, vaulting ahead of James Madison (10-11 CAA), UNCW (10-11) and William & Mary (10-11).
Northeastern burst out to the 3-0 lead during the second inning without a ball leaving the infield, earning four walks and a hit-by-pitch around
Spenser Smith's bunt single that had initially loaded the bases.
Jake Rosen plated the Huskies' first run with his RBI fielder's choice to the left side while
Jake Farrell (hit batsman) and
Scott Holzwasser (walk) both collected stand-in RBIs as well.
Right-hand starter
David Stiehl retired the first nine batters he faced before Javon Fields tripled against him to lead off the fourth inning. Stiehl logged six strikeouts across six innings of work against Towson (13-38, 6-16 CAA), surrendering three hits – one being Brad Powers's RBI single that scored Fields from third base.
Carrying its 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, Northeastern capitalized on two errors to plate a pair of unearned runs.
After
Corey DiLoreto had popped up behind the plate, Holzwasser aggressively tagged from second base, drawing an errant throw to third base that prompted him to score. Two batters later, the Huskies earned another free run as Tom Flacco dropped
Michael Geaslen's final out in right field, allowing
Kyle Peterson to score from second base.
Brandon Dufault relieved Stiehl and threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings on top of Northeastern's 5-1 and 6-1 leads prior to Towson rallying for three ninth-inning runs. Despite conceding a two-RBI triple to Jack Rotteveel, Dufault brought the Huskies over the finish line, earning his third save of the season.
Northeastern combined to draw 11 walks from the Tigers' pitching staff.
Jake Farrell reached base three times – once via a walk and twice as a hit batsman – but witnessed his 16-game hitting streak come to an end.
