TOWSON, Md. – Receiving eight strikeouts from left-hander Sean Mellen on Friday and seven combined hits from Scott Holzwasser and Spenser Smith, the Northeastern baseball team overcame its 2-0 deficit to defeat Towson, 6-3, at Schuerholz Park, punching its ticket to the 2019 CAA tournament.

Mellen opened his final regular season start by posting three hitless innings for the Huskies, who clinched their seventh consecutive CAA tournament berth – the second longest streak among the conference's current membership (UNCW). The NU southpaw bounced back after surrendering a two-run home run to Jack Rotteveel during the fourth inning, riding out seven innings for the Huskies while allowing three runs and six hits.

Northeastern (26-26, 12-11 CAA) drew level with Towson (13-39, 6-17 CAA) three batters into the sixth inning as Jake Farrell and Holzwasser connected on back-to-back solo home runs, evening the game at 2-2. Farrell crushed his team leading, ninth homer onto the neighboring Towsontown Boulevard in right field while Holzwasser carried Josh Selis's 1-1 delivery to left center.

Jeff Costello and Corey DiLoreto followed with consecutive singles, sending the Tigers to the bullpen with one out and runners on the corners. Costello later rushed home as Kody Reeser threw wild during Smith's at-bat, putting the Huskies on top, 3-2.

Northeastern and Towson matched solitary runs during the seventh inning before Smith manufactured two insurance runs during the eighth inning. The rookie shortstop carried an RBI double to right field prior to stealing third base and scoring courtesy of the Tigers' dropped reception.

Smith finished the day with a season and career high, three hits, out of the ninth spot in the Huskies' lineup.

Andrew Misiaszek threw a scoreless ninth inning, earning his 10th save of the season.
