HARRISONBURG, Va. – Pitted against the top two seeds in the 2019 CAA tournament during consecutive elimination games on Friday, the fourth-seeded Northeastern baseball team battled relentlessly to keep its postseason title hopes alive, defeating second-seeded College of Charleston, 8-7, before exiting the field via its 8-6 loss to top-seeded Elon.
Â
Northeastern (28-29, 12-12 CAA) placed fourth among the league's six postseason teams, winning multiple games while facing elimination for the third time during the last four tournaments. The Huskies' 2019 senior class will depart the program as its winningest of all-time, having sported 124 victories across the last four seasons.
NORTHEASTERN vs. COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
Northeastern plated two first-inning runs for its third straight CAA tournament game, jumping out to the 1-0 lead as
Jake Farrell shuttled Brooks Lucas's 1-1 pitch through the right field gap, scoring
Ian Fair from first base.
Scott Holzwasser followed with a double that resulted from College of Charleston's outfield collision before
Corey DiLoreto grounded Farrell in from third base to cap the NU scoring.
Â
After Chaz Davey's RBI double against
Kyle Murphy had brought the Cougars within a run at 2-1, Northeastern assembled an aggressive two-run rally during the second inning, knocking Lucas out of the game.
Ryan Solomon cued three straight NU hits, doubling down the left field line and later scoring on
Michael Geaslen's RBI infield single.
Â
Charleston dug into the Huskies' 4-1 lead during the middle innings, earning a run back with Joey Mundy's fourth-inning, solo home run. Bradley Dixon tied the game during the fifth inning with his two-RBI base hit while Danny Wondrack's ensuing double set up Logan McRae's sacrifice fly that put the Cougars in front for the first time at 5-4.
Â
Northeastern caught magic in a bottle during the sixth inning when
Jeff Costello tripled to the wall in right field, legging out the extra 90 feet when Charleston's incoming relay throw traveled out of play. However, the Cougars regained the lead, 6-5, against the NU bullpen as Wondrack hit a solo home run against
David Stiehl, who had started and thrown 57 pitches during Thursday's elimination game against sixth-seeded James Madison.
Â
Battling back, the Huskies pushed across three runs during the bottom of the seventh inning to charge in front, 8-6. Fair, Farrell and Holzwasser registered consecutive singles to tie the game at 6-6 while Costello proceeded to drive the go-ahead, two-RBI single to left field.
Â
Facing
Andrew Misiaszek, College of Charleston threatened to blow the NU closer's single-season, record-tying 12th save, cutting the margin to 8-7 with Clay Hunt's sacrifice fly. With runners at the corners and two outs, Misiaszek's 0-2 pitch bounced high and away off Geaslen's catcher's glove, but the Northeastern battery managed to successfully deny McLendon Sears with a dramatic 2-1 putout at the plate to end the game.
NORTHEASTERN vs. ELONÂ
Northeastern flexed its aggression once again during the first inning, jumping out to the early 1-0 lead as
Scott Holzwasser doubled in
Ian Fair from first base. Fair, who had reached on an error, was wheeled in by head coach
Mike Glavine at third base, sliding under the tag at the plate to put the Huskies on the scoreboard.
Â
Despite Cam Devanney's first-inning, two-run homer providing Elon with the temporary, 2-1 lead,
Corey DiLoreto made up the ground during the third inning, sending his first collegiate home run – a solo homer – to right field to knot the game at 2-2.
Â
Devanney did Brown and the Huskies in for more damage during the bottom of the third inning, guiding an RBI double to right center field to put the Phoenix back in front, 3-2. Two batters later, Matt Oldham recorded another RBI double, extending the margin to 4-2.
Â
Cam Walsh erased Northeastern's deficit with one swing of the bat during the fourth inning, powering a two-run home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 4-4. However, Elon rallied for go-ahead runs during both the fifth and sixth innings, taking the 6-4 lead courtesy of Oldham's solo home run.
Â
Despite the Phoenix carrying an 8-4 lead into the eighth inning, the Huskies refused to back down.
Jake Farrell followed Fair's leadoff walk with an RBI double – his fifth extra-base hit of the 2019 CAA tournament – while Holzwasser knocked an RBI single through the right side, trimming Elon's lead to 8-6.
Â
Northeastern introduced the potential tying run during its eighth inning at the plate, but lost a touch of momentum when Holzwasser was picked off at first base, clearing the bags. The Huskies recovered to introduce runners at first and second base twice – once more during the eighth inning and again during the ninth inning – but were unable to navigate Ty Adcock, who earned the save for the Phoenix.
