BOSTON – The Northeastern women's hockey program and head coach
Dave Flint unveiled a talented, eight-member incoming class for the 2019-20 season on Thursday. Peyton Anderson, Megan Carter, Peyton Cullaton, Kate Holmes, Katy Knoll, Alexa Matses, Gwyneth Philips and Jess Schryver will join 20 returning letterwinners on a team that celebrated its second straight Hockey East championship and third NCAA tournament appearance in the last four seasons in 2018-19.
"We have a very talented group of student-athletes joining our team this fall," Flint explained. "I would like to thank my staff –
Nick Carpenito,
Lindsay Berman, and former assistant Jeff Pellegrini – for their hard work in identifying and recruiting such a great group of individuals. We are excited to see how they will compliment our already-strong returning roster."
Getting to Know Peyton Anderson: A left-shooting forward from Arvada, Colorado, Peyton Anderson joins the Huskies from Ralston Valley High School and Team Colorado. Anderson was invited to USA Hockey National Development Camp in 2016 and 2017, and earned an invite to the USA Hockey U-18 Select Camp in 2018.
Flint on Anderson: "Peyton is an outstanding two-way player who can contribute in all aspects of the game – offensively, defensively and on special teams. She has speed and skill, plays a physical 200-foot game, and is very responsible in the defensive zone. Peyton creates a lot of offense with her tenacity, which makes it very difficult for opposing players defensively."
Getting to Know Megan Carter: The lone blue-liner in Northeastern's 2019-20 incoming class, Megan Carter comes to Huntington Avenue from the Canada U-18 National Team and the Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres program. Carter helped Canada win a gold medal at the 2019 IIHF Women's World U-18 Championship in Japan, and was also previously invited to Canada's U-18 Summer Selection Camp in 2017. During her time with Stoney Creek, Carter helped the program to a silver medal at the 2019 PWHL Final Four.
Flint on Carter: "Megan is a physical, two-way defenseman who defends the rush very well and is not afraid to jump in and join the offense at any point. She does a great job getting pucks through to the net and her attention to detail in the defensive zone will make it very tough for opponents to get quality scoring opportunities. Megan's success on the international stage should help her to transition seamlessly to the college game."
Getting to Know Peyton Cullaton: A left-shooting forward from Lakeville, Minnesota, Peyton Cullaton comes to Northeastern from Lakeville North High School. Cullaton was twice named Honorable Mention All-Conference and helped her team to two DECA State Finals appearances.
Flint on Cullaton: "Peyton is another outstanding two-way forward who plays with a chip on her shoulder. She is highly intelligent on the ice and is outstanding defensively. Peyton goes a great job getting into shooting lanes and does not shy away from contact. Her size and strength create a lot of space for her teammates and we expect her to chip in offensively as a result of her sound defensive-zone play."
Getting to Know Kate Holmes: A right-shooting forward from Norfolk, Massachusetts, Kate Holmes joins the Northeastern family from the Williston Northampton School and the East Coast Wizards program. Holmes was named a First-Team All-NEPSAC All-Star as a senior at Williston Northampton, while racking up 100 points during the season – the sixth-most in school history.
Flint on Holmes: "Kate is a very intelligent forward with an outstanding scoring touch. She sees the ice well and has a very high compete level. Kate has a knack for scoring in tight and her hockey IQ allows her to put herself in great scoring areas when she is off the puck. Kate will provide great scoring depth and her responsible defensive game will allow us to trust her in many different game situations."
Getting to Know Katy Knoll: A right-shooting forward from Amherst, New York, Katy Knoll comes to Northeastern after playing in two IIHF Women's World U-18 Championships with the United States National Team. Knoll helped the U-18 squad earn a gold medal at the 2018 World Championship, scoring two goals in the final, as well as a silver medal at the 2019 edition of the tournament, during which she was named one of USA Hockey's "Top Three Players" of the competition. Knoll starred in three sports at the Nichols School and also played for the Toronto Aeros program, winning provincial and league championships with the team in 2017-18.
Flint on Knoll: "Katy is a highly-talented power forward with great offensive instincts and a high hockey IQ. She plays a physical brand of hockey and never shies away from battles along the walls or in front of the net. She is very responsible in the defensive zone and will be relied upon to play in many different game situations right away. With two years of international experience under her belt, we expect Katy to have a significant impact on the program as soon as she steps on campus."
Getting to Know Alexa Matses: A goaltender from Boxford, Massachusetts, Alexa Matses joins the Huskies from Phillips Academy and the Boston Shamrocks program, where she captained the Tier 1 junior team in 2018-19. Matses attended USA Hockey National Development Camps at the U-14 and U-18 levels and was named a Massachusetts State All-Star in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Matses also earned numerous honors with the Assabet Valley program, including Tier 1 state championships at the U-12, U-14 and U-16 levels, and USA Nationals Tier 1 championships in 2012 and 2014.
Flint on Matses: "Alexa is a competitive and technically-sound goaltender. She is great on her angles and tracks pucks very well through traffic. Her size and athleticism make it very difficult for shooters to find the net. Alexa will add great depth to our already-strong goaltending corps."
Getting to Know Gwyneth Philips: A goaltender from Athens, Ohio, Gwyneth Philips comes to Northeastern from Shady Side Academy and the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. Philips was named First-Team All-WIHLMA for Shady Side in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2018-19, while helping the team to WIHLMA league championships in 2016, 2017 and 2019. During her time with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program (2009-19), Philips backstopped the team to World Selects Tournament titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and national championship appearances in 2015 and 2017. Philips attended USA Hockey National Development Camp in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and has been invited to USA National Select Camp (2017), the USA National Festival (2017), and the USA National Goaltender Camp (2018).
Flint on Philips: "Gwyneth is a highly-competitive and athletic goaltender. She is technically sound, very active in her crease, and is very efficient with her movement. Gwyneth has great control of her rebounds and has the ability to steal games on her own. With her efficiency and athleticism, we expect Gwyneth to challenge for playing time immediately."
Getting to Know Jess Schryver: A left-shooting forward from Ansonia, Connecticut, Jess Schryver joins the NU family from the Loomis Chaffee School and the Mid Fairfield CT Stars program. Schryver was named All-NEPSAC First Team as a junior and a senior, and All-NEPSAC Honorable Mention as a sophomore. A
USA Today Preseason High School All-American, Schryver was also named the U.S. Hockey Report 2019 Girls' Prep Top Forward as she finished her prep school career with 159 points. Additionally, Schryver attended USA Hockey Development Camp for four years, and USA Select Camp for two years.
Flint on Schryver: "Jess is an incredibly talented playmaker with great scoring ability. She is an effortless skater and has the ability to make difficult plays at high speeds. Her skill set allows her to create space for herself, while her vision gives her the ability to generate offensive chances for her teammates. We expect Jess to have a significant contribution both offensively and defensively right away."
