HOCKEY EAST RELEASE
WAKEFIELD, Mass.— Northeastern women's hockey was well represented with six Huskies earning honors from Hockey East as the league unveiled its preliminary postseason award selections on Wednesday. The Huskies claimed all five individual awards in the initial round of postseason awards.
Sophomore forward
Alina Mueller was awarded the PNC Bank Three Stars Award and was named the Scoring Champion after posting 44 points in league play. Senior captain
Paige Capistran was honored with the Sportsmanship Award, senior
Matti Hartman was awarded the Best Defensive Forward and junior
Skylar Fontaine was named Best Defenseman. Rounding out the Huskies' award honorees are
Katy Knoll and
Megan Carter who were named to the Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team.
Mueller, a Patty Kazmaier Award Top-3 Finalist, posted 44 points in Hockey East play to lead all league players. With 27 league games played, Mueller led the conference in goals (20), assists (24), points (44), shorthanded goals (3), game-winning goals (7) and plus/minus rating (+36). Mueller was a three-time Hockey East Player of the Month during September/October, January and February. To claim the PNC Bank Three Star Award, the sophomore finished as the No. 1 star four times, No. 2 star four times and No. 3 star three times in 27 league games.
Capistran is the first Husky to be honored with the Sportsmanship Award. The award is presented each season to a player who demonstrates leadership and commitment both on and off the ice, as voted on by Hockey East head coaches. Capistran is a first year captain for the Huskies and has appeared in over 140 games for the Huskies, helping lead the team to new heights both on and off the ice.
Hartman joins the elite company of Casey Pickett and
Hayley Scamurra as winners of the Best Defensive Forward Award from the Huskies. Hartman helped the Huskies to league-best 14 shutouts during the season. Hartman has posted a career-high 19 points off eight goals and 11 assists.
Fontaine is the Huskies first player to be honored as the Best Defenseman, after being named runner-up for the award in 2018-19. The blue-liner posted 38 points off 14 goals and 24 assists, her 38 points are the most in Northeastern history from a defenseman in the Hockey East era. Fontaine posted 28 points in league play, eight more than any other defenseman and sixth overall in the conference.
Knoll and Carter round out the Huskies' honorees, both appearing on the Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team. Knoll finished third among Hockey East rookies and first among all Husky freshman with 26 points off 10 goals and 16 assists. Knoll was named the WCHA National Rookie of the Month during November, as well as the Hockey East Rookie of the Month.
Carter was a crucial part of the Huskies' defensive core, partnering with
Skylar Fontaine for most of the season on the first line. Carter posted 11 points on 2 goals and 9 assists and helped the Huskies to 14 shutouts.
The remainder of the awards, including the Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, and the HEAW All-Star Teams will be unveiled on in the coming days by Hockey East.
