Women's basketball welcomes three to 2020-21 roster

BOSTON – Turning the page to the 2020-21 season, Northeastern women's basketball head coach Kelly Cole formally welcomed Izzy Larsen, Leyla Öztürk and Maddie Vizza on Thursday as the three student-athletes comprising the Huskies' incoming class. The trio will join 10 returners on Northeastern's 2020-21 roster as the Huskies pursue their first CAA title.
 
IZZY LARSEN
Position:
 Forward
Hometown:  Hatfield, Pa.
Previous school:  Wesleyan School / Archbishop Wood
Academic/career interests:  Aspires to become a journalist.
Coaches' assessment:  "Izzy is a versatile stretch four-player who has a nose for the ball. Her on-court IQ makes her a great rebounder and asset to our interior game."
 
Accolades
• 2019-20:  Averaged more than 10 points and 10 rebounds per game during her 2019-20 season at Archbishop Wood High School (Warminster, Pennsylvania) … All-Area Third Team selection … Named to the Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) All-Catholic Third Team … Registered 20 points and 14 rebounds during Archbishop Wood's appearance in the PCL championship game.
• 2016-19:  Program record holder in single-game rebounds (22) at the Wesleyan School (Peachtree Corners, Georgia) … Three-time Georgia state finalist and two-time state champion (2016-17, 2017-18) … Her 2018-19 season accolades include She Got Game Classic Most Valuable Player and Gwinnett Tip-Off Club All-Region selections.
• Competed on the travel circuit for Peak Performance and Finest Basketball Club (FBC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Leyla Ozturk
LEYLA ÖZTÜRK
Position:  Forward
Hometown:  Berlin, Germany
Previous school:  Schiller-Gymnasium
Academic/career interests:  Communication studies, media and screen studies
Coaches' assessment:  "Leyla has mobility and versatility both face-up and with her back to the basket. She runs the floor well, has great ball handling as a forward and can play both sides of the ball. She adds interior height and finesse while providing a wealth of FIBA experience."
 
Accolades
• Competed as a power forward with ALBA Berlin (Berlin, Germany).
• 2019-20:  Co-led ALBA Berlin to an 8-8 record and sixth-place standing in the Second Bundesliga North division prior to the suspension of play due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• 2018-19:  Averaged 12.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.4 blocks per game during youth Bundesliga (WNBL) Under-18 competition … Set career-best marks in rebounds (19), blocks (seven) and steals (five).
• Member of the German U-16 national team that placed sixth at the 2017 European Championship.
• Scored a career high, 53 points, during a February 2015 game in Germany's highest U-15 regional league.

MADDIE VIZZA
Position:  Guard
Hometown:  Southampton, Pa.
Previous school:  Germantown Academy
Academic/career interests:  Interested in studying biology with aspirations of working in the medical field.
Coaches' assessment:  "Maddie is a hard-working point guard who demonstrates desirable leadership at the position. She can deliver the ball and is a weapon behind the 3-point line."
 
Accolades
• Four-year starting point guard at Germantown Academy and two-year captain.
• Member of Germantown's 1,000-point scoring club … Scored a career high, 29 points, courtesy of nine 3-point field goals.
• 2020 All-State honoree in Pennsylvania.
• Two-time All Inter-Academic League selection (2018-19, 2019-20).
• Member of Germantown's 2019 state championship team … Four-time Inter-Academic League champion (2017-20) … Helped the Patriots chalk a combined 47-1 record across her career.
