BOSTON – Trailing by 11 points with 11:37 to go, the Northeastern men's basketball team (6-4) turned it on down the stretch, using runs of 11-2 and 12-2 to overtake Massachusetts (6-4) and earn an 82-76 victory on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
Â
Four Huskies reached double-figures, led by 16 points from
Shaquille Walters on 5-of-11 from the floor (3-of-6 from three).
Nikola Djogo added 15 points, five assists and four steals in his first action after missing the last three games with an injury, while
Tyreek Scott-Grayson and
Vito Cubrilo added 10 points apiece.
Â
Noah Fernandes (8-of-17; 6-of-12 from deep) and Rich Kelly (10-of-18; 3-of-6 from three) were the story for UMass, scoring 25 and 24 points respectively for a Minuteman team that shot 47% overall and 44% from beyond the arc (12-of-27). NU was 28-of-50 (56%) from the floor and 53% (9-of-17) from three.
Â
• Massachusetts shot the lights out to start the game, bolting out to an 11-2 lead less than three minutes in, with Fernandes scoring eight of his 18 first half points in the span.
Â
• Northeastern chipped away at the deficit as the half wore on, with Walters scoring 11 in the first half alone before taking its first lead of the night with two minutes to play until the break.
Â
• Kelly drained three straight three-pointers to open the second half, allowing Massachusetts to retake the lead early in the second half before using a 7-0 run to lead by 11 midway through.
Â
• A scuffle resulting in double technical fouls on UMass' Michael Steadman and Northeastern's
Chris Doherty provided a spark for the Huskies, who outscored Massachusetts 33-18 the rest of the way.
Â
• NU took the lead for good with 6:28 remaining in regulation and came up with a big defensive stop in the final minute before a pair of Djogo free throws sealed the win.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Sunday when Northeastern plays host to Davidson at 1 p.m. from Matthews Arena.
