FLINT PREVIEW

ERIE, Pa. - No. 1 Northeastern (20-1-1) will open the National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship on Monday against No. 8 Robert Morris (16-7-1) inside Erie Insurance Arena. The game will be streamed on NCAA.com and puck drop will be at 2 p.m.

LEADING THE WAY
The top-ranked Huskies have won an NCAA-best 52 games over the last two seasons, including an astounding .892 winning percentage (52-5-3). Northeastern is unbeaten over its last 20 games this season, the longest streak in program history since going undefeated in the 1987-88 season (26-0-1).

NCAA TOURNAMENT
This is the fourth consecutive NCAA tournament the Huskies have qualified for, the longest streak in program history. Last season, Northeastern was the hottest team in the NCAA coming off an impressive 9-1 win over UConn in the Hockey East Championship and were set to host No. 6 Princeton before the Covid shutdown, finishing with an NCAA-best 32 wins.

Northeastern is making its fifth all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament (2016, '18, '19, '20, '21). This is the first No. 1 overall seed for the Huskies, following up on their second-highest seed last season at No. 3, before the national championship was canceled.
Games in the NCAA tournament:
2016 at No. 1 Boston College - L, 5-1 (3/12/16)
2018 at No. 3 Colgate - L, 3-1 (3/10/18)
2019 vs. No. 6 Cornell - L,  3-2 (OT) (3/16/19)
2020 vs. No. 6 Princeton - Canceled due to Covid (scheduled for 3/14/20)
2021 vs. No. 8 Robert Morris, Erie Insurance Arena (3/15/21)

THREE-HEADED MONSTER
The Huskies have three players that are top-10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award for the first time in program history, Skylar Fontaine (Sr., D), Aerin Frankel (Sr., G) and Alina Mueller (Jr., C). All three players lead the country in their respective positions in many statistical categories.

Fontaine leads all blue-liners with 11 goals and 25 points this season. A Hockey East All-Star first team honoree, Fontaine leads the country with six power-play goals and is 11th in the NCAA with three game-winning goals for the Huskies. A native of East Greenwich, R.I., Fontaine earned her second consecutive Hockey East Best Defenseman Award and is a Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist for the first time in her career.

A native of Briarcliffe Manor, N.Y., Frankel was named to the Patty Kazmaier top-10 list for the second consecutive season, becoming the first Northeastern goaltender to earn such recognition. She garnered Co-Hockey East Player of the Year, joining Mueller, for the first time and won her third straight Hockey East Goaltender of the Year accolade. She leads the country in goals against average (0.70), save percentage (.969), winning percentage (.925), shutouts (9) and wins (18) and is a top-3 finalist for the inaugural National Goalie of the Year Award.

Mueller, a native of Winterthur, Switzerland, leads the country with 35 points (11 goals, 24 assists) and is a three-time Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist, making the top three for the first time last season. She earned her second consecutive Hockey East Player of the Year honors this season, sharing the distinction with teammate Frankel, and has 11 multi-point games this year. The Huskies are 32-0-1 over the last two years when Mueller scores a goal and she was named the top prospect under 25 in the world by The Ice Garden (story here). The game against Robert Morris will be the first NCAA tournament game for Mueller as she was injured her freshman season and was unable to play in the overtime loss to No. 6 Cornell (3/16/19).

HEAD OF THE CLASS
The senior class of Katie Cipra, Fontaine, Frankel, Brooke Hobson (captain), Veronika Pettey and Tessa Ward have never lost a Hockey East tournament game, leading the Huskies to four consecutive championships and a perfect 15-0 record. The Huskies have won 98 games during this class' four-year run and boast a .755 winning percentage.

THE COACH
Dave Flint is coaching his 12th season for the Huskies and has led Northeastern to all five of its NCAA tournament appearances. He is the all-time winningest coach in program history with 254 wins and set a new all-time Hockey East record with 27 postseason wins in just 35 games. Coach Flint is a four-time Hockey East Coach of the Year (2012, '19, '20, '21) and led the Huskies to their first-ever No. 1 ranking.
