Frankel Named Top-3 Finalist for Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo – Northeastern's Aerin Frankel has been named as one of the top-3 finalists for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, announced by USA Hockey on Thursday. A native of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., Frankel was named the inaugural WHCA Goalie of the Year and becomes the second Husky goaltender to earn a spot in the final three of the Patty Kazmaier Award, joining recent Hall of Fame inductee Florence Schelling (2012).

Frankel joins senior forward Daryl Watts of Wisconsin and senior forward Grace Zumwinkle from Minnesota for the award, given annually to the top player in Division I women's ice hockey. The 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award ceremony will take place virtually this year and will be announced at a later date.

The senior netminder leads the country in goals against average (0.71), save percentage (.969), winning percentage (.929), wins (19) and shutouts (9). She is unbeaten in her last 19 starts for the Huskies and her goals against average and save percentage are currently both NCAA single-season records. Despite playing far less games this season, she is just one shutout shy of her single-season record of 10 set last season.

Frankel shattered league and program records with 28 career shutouts and 26 Hockey East shutouts, career wins (77), career minutes played (6,172), league save percentage (.971) and Hockey East tournament wins (15). The Huskies went 19-1-1 with Frankel in the net, aiding the nation's longest unbeaten streak at 21 games. She has been awarded Hockey East Co-Player of the Year alongside top-10 Patty Kazmaier Finalist Alina Mueller, while also notching national and league recognitions on a weekly and monthly basis.

A three-time Hockey East Goaltender of the Year, Frankel's career save percentage currently stands second all-time in NCAA history and she ranks 11th in all-time shutouts. She is trying to become just the fourth goaltender to win the Patty Kazmaier Award, joining Wisconsin's Ann Renee-Desbiens (2017) and Jessie Vetter (2009), and Brown's Ali Brewer (2000).

Frankel will lead No. 1 Northeastern later today against No. 5 Minnesota Duluth in the national semifinals of the Women's Frozen Four. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. between the No. 1 seeded Huskies and No. 5 seeded Bulldogs and the game will be televised on ESPN3.
