Huskies Swing Past UMass, 18-1

BOX SCORE (PDF) | POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Right-handed pitcher Kyle Murphy struck out a career-high 10 batters and tossed 6.0 strong innings, allowing just two hits and one run, while Ian Fair went 3-for-6 with a double, triple, home run and three runs batted in to lead Northeastern (8-5) to an 18-1 onslaught of UMass (7-6) on Friday at Friedman Diamond in front of fans for the first time this season. The Huskies outhit the Minutemen 21-3 and improve to 4-0 this season when committing no errors.

Corey DiLoreto returned to the lineup for the Huskies and went 3-for-6 with three RBIs, Danny Crossen finished with two doubles and one RBI, and JP Olson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead Northeastern offensively. Left-handed pitcher James Quinlivan struck out two batters in the seventh inning, while RHP Henry Ennen faced the minimum in the eighth inning and RHP Rick Burroni tossed a scoreless ninth inning, while striking out one.

Jared Dupere smashed his third home run of the season to right-center field, and Scott Holzwasser pushed his on-base streak to 31 games after crushing a double and finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ben Malgeri added a 2-for-4 performance and drove in a pair of runs, and Spenser Smith posted two hits and one RBI.

Every player in the NU lineup had at least one base hit and the Huskies improve to 3-0 this season when two or more players homer. The 21 hits are the most by the Huskies since tallying 23 against Towson in a 23-6 victory at Friedman Diamond on April 28, 2018.

The Huskies batted around in the bottom of the first inning and scored seven runs with two outs, highlighted by doubles off the bat of Fair and Crossen. NU added a run in the second inning courtesy of the long ball by Dupere, and two more runs in the third inning as Olson and Malgeri each drove in runs. Murphy would make that stand up with his masterful pitching and superb breaking ball, fanning 10-of-21 batters faced on 79 pitches.

The Huskies and Minutemen will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Friedman Diamond, beginning at 11 a.m. The games will be streamed on FloBaseball.com.
