BOSTON -Â Northeastern's
Jan Berend stroked the first varsity eight in a hot start to lead the Huskies over Boston University early Saturday morning.
Jeremy Newton led the second varsity eight while
Karim Kane took the first varsity four to leads within the first 500 meters to beat out Boston University in three of the four races of the day.Â
After a powerful start for the first race of the day, the first varsity four was able to get the advantage early and maintain the lead all the way to the finish line with a final time of 7:02.700, 12.8 seconds ahead of BU. With a strong and experienced crew in the first varsity eight, the Huskies were able to finish 5.4 seconds ahead of the Terriers, crossing the finish line at 6:02.4 to get the premiere win of the morning. The second varsity eight was able to push through the Charles River with a time of 6:25.200, 12.1 seconds ahead of BU as the conditions seemed to worsen with a strong head wind as the morning went on.
Trying to progress ahead of BU for the entirety of the 2000 meters, the third varsity eight fell 3.46 seconds behind the Terrier boat with a final time of 6.31.424.
With their strong leadership, Northeastern set the tone for the season after not having raced in almost two full years. The Huskies look to return to the waters on May 1st to take on Wisconsin, Boston University and Syracuse here on the Charles River.Â
