BOSTON – Trailing by as many as 15 in the second half, the Northeastern men's basketball team (6-11, 0-6) stormed all the way back to send the game to overtime, but 83% shooting from Delaware in the extra session allowed the Blue Hens (12-6, 3-2) to edge the Huskies on Monday night at Matthews Arena.
Shaquille Walters had a career-high 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting along with four rebounds and four assists to lead four Huskies in double figures. He was joined by
Jahmyl Telfort (16 points on 6-of-15 from the floor),
Nikola Djogo (15 points, seven rebounds) and
Coleman Stucke (15 points, 3-of-5 from three) for a Northeastern team that was 46% from the floor, 48% from deep on the night and received 38 points from the bench.
Delaware, meanwhile, was led by Dylan Painter's 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds. UD had four players in double figures and shot 54% (28-of-52) on the night and 9-of-18 from three.
• Delaware shot 58% in the opening half as the Blue Hens led by as many as 11 before settling for a 39-29 advantage at halftime with Painter and Asamoah leading the way with 10 points apiece.
• UD opened the game on a 14-3 run in the first 5:30 of the contest before the Huskies found their footing as the half continued, chipping away to bring the deficit down to as few as five with 2:49 until the break. Walters led the way with 10 points in the opening half for a Northeastern squad that shot 35% (8-of-23) overall and 50% (5-of-10) from deep.
• Delaware came out in the second half and increased its lead to as many as 15 with 15:47 to play before the Huskies went to work battling back, first using a 9-2 run to get back within single digits with 14:41 left before bringing it within one possession with a 9-1 run to make it 58-56 with 10:40 remaining.
• The teams went punch-for-punch from there, with neither squad going up by more than six the rest of the way. Northeastern leveled the game at 64 with 6:33 left thanks to a huge three from Walters before the game was sent to overtime tied at 69 thanks to 57% shooting from NU in the second half.
• The Blue Hens took advantage of their possessions in the extra frame, shooting 5-of-6 overall while NU was 3-of-8, allowing Delaware to take the victory, 82-76.
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday when Northeastern hosts Hofstra at 12 p.m. at Matthews Arena. As a reminder, home games at Northeastern are currently closed to spectators.
