PHILADELPHIA – Chris Doherty recorded his seventh double-double of the season for the Northeastern men's basketball team (7-18, 1-13), but Drexel (12-11, 7-6) opened up a big halftime lead on the Huskies that it wouldn't relinquish on Saturday at Daskalakis Athletic Center, 67-51.
Doherty led the Huskies with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, the most for a Northeastern player since Scott Eatherton in 2013-14.
Northeastern shot 35% from the field (19-of-55) on the afternoon and 3-of-15 from deep. Doherty was joined in double figures by
Shaquille Walters (13 points on 6-of-12), who played in his 100
th career game, and
Nikola Djogo (12 points, five rebounds).
Drexel was led by Xavier Bell's 22 points on 9-of-18 overall for a Dragons squad that was 26-of-57 and turned the ball over just six times on the afternoon. Melik Martin joined Bell is double figures with 13 points.
• Northeastern couldn't buy a bucket in the first half, shooting 20% to allow the Dragons to use runs of 11-0 and 7-0 to open up a 20-point lead at halftime, 36-16.
• Doherty had eight points and seven rebounds to lead the way for the Huskies despite picking up two fouls early, while Djogo added four points on 2-of-6 from the floor.
• At the other end, Xavier Bell was 5-of-11 overall for 12 points for Drexel, while Amari Williams contributed seven points for a Dragons team that scored 22 of its 36 first half points in the paint.
• Northeastern would come out shooting 52% in the second half (13-of-25), and used a 12-2 run over almost five minutes to claw within 13 with 13:33 to play.
• A 6-0 run later in the half would bring the visitors within 12, but that's as close as NU would get as Drexel was 11-of-28 from the field in the final 20 minutes and 6-of-8 from the stripe.
