BOSTON – Chris Doherty recorded his second straight double-double and the Northeastern men's basketball team (7-16, 1-11) held Towson (17-7, 8-3) to a 1-of-15 afternoon from three as the Huskies earned their first win in conference action on Saturday at Matthews Arena, 58-53.

"I'm really proud of our team," said head coach
Bill Coen. "It's been a long month. These guys have been though a lot and it would've been easy to mail in the rest of the season, but I thought they showed a lot of heart and determination against a really good Towson team."

Doherty finished the day with 14 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season in 38 minutes of action. He was joined in double figures by
Nikola Djogo (12 points), who was 4-of-9 from deep, and
Coleman Stucke (10 points on 4-of-6 from the field).

Northeastern, which never trailed in the game, shot 46% in the game (20-of-43) and 9-of-23 from three while holding the Tigers to a 21-of-48 afternoon overall. Cameron Holden had a game-high 21 points (7-of-13), while Charles Thompson added 14 points (5-of-7).Â

"They put 40 minutes of effort in today, and we needed every second of it," Coen said. "The guys are happy and hopefully it's a momentum changing moment in our season."

• Northeastern started hot for the second straight night, bolting out to a 12-2 lead less than six minutes into the game, highlighted by back-to-back three from Djogo.

• Doherty was a workhorse down low in the opening half, leading the group with 12 points on 5-of-6 from the floor in 19 minutes of action for a Northeastern squad that shot 57% (12-of-21).

• At the other end, the Tigers were held to a 36% shooting performance in the opening half, and just 1-of-8 from three. Holden led Towson with seven points while the Huskies closed the used a 9-0 run to lead by as many as 13 in the half before heading to the locker up 11 at 32-21.Â

• Northeastern maintained its three-possession advantage for much of the second half, leading by as many as 14 thanks to a pair of buckets from
Quirin Emanga off the bench.

• Towson used an 8-2 run over a three-minute stretch to cut the deficit to three with 1:53 to play, but clutch free throws from
Jahmyl Telfort and
Shaquille Walters helped preserve the advantage for the hosts.Â

The Huskies will head back out on the road next week, beginning Thursday at Delaware. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on FloHoops.
