BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern Huskies (12-8-1) fell to the Boston College Eagles (8-11) by a score of 1-0 in their midweek matchup Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Eagles took the lead in the first on a sacrifice fly, and the Northeastern pitching staff held them to just that one run, but were unable to get run support.
Â
- The Eagles got on the board early in the contest; BC began the game with back to back singles which put runners on the corners – the number-3 hitter Luke Gold hit a sac-fly to deep left field to score the runner from third for the 1-0 lead.
- The Huskies attempted to answer back in the bottom of the frame with two leadoff singles of their own, eventually loading the bases, but the BC defense was able to get out of the jam.
- Eric Yost (1-1)Â got the start for Northeastern and went 4.0 innings allowing just the one earned run, five hits, and no walks while fanning seven.
- The Northeastern defense was just as strong as its pitching, with Yost coming off the mound to field an attempted sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth - BC had runners at the corners, but Yost calmly collected the ball and tossed it to JP Olson at the plate who tagged out the runner.
- Yost was relieved by Jordy Allard in the fifth – Allard pitched two scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk. He struck out four of the eight batters he faced.
- Dennis Colleran took over in the seventh – he also went 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk with three K's.
- Thomas Balboni took the mound in the top of the ninth going 1-2-3 with a strikeout. In total, the Huskies pitching staff allowed just seven hits, two walks, and one earned run while striking out 15. The NU defense stranded eight BC runners.
- The Huskies were unable to get the bats going with runners in scoring position, leaving seven runners on base.Â
- Justin Bosland tried to fire up the dugout with his one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but BC was able to retire the final two outs on a foul out and ground out.
The Huskies begin conference play this weekend with a three game series at the College of Charleston. First game of that series is scheduled for Friday, March 25 at 4pm on FloBaseball.
