WASHINGTON D.C. – Chris Doherty had a performance for the ages with a career-high 26 points on a perfect 10-of-10 night from the floor as the No. 9 Northeastern men's basketball team (9-21) tied the game in the final minute to force overtime before opening OT with a 9-0 run to knock off No. 8 William & Mary (5-27) in the CAA First Round on Saturday night at the Entertainment and Sports Arena, 68-63.
Â
Doherty's night marked just the second time in tournament history that a player went 10-of-10 from the field, and first since Navy's David Robinson went 12-of-12 in 1985.
Â
With the victory,
Bill Coen became the winningest coach in CAA Championship history (19-13), passing George Mason's Jim Larranaga (18-11).
Â
The Huskies advance to take on top-seeded Towson on Sunday at 12 p.m. on FloHoops.
Â
Doherty, who added six rebounds to move into 10th place on Northeastern single-season record list for rebounding (260), was joined in double figures by
Shaquille Walters (17 points on 6-of-16 shooting) for a Huskies squad that was 23-of-56 overall (41%) and 6-of-23 from deep.
Quirin Emanga was a force defensively all night long, finishing with a career-high 10 rebounds.
Â
William & Mary, meanwhile, was 22-of-66 on the night and 5-of-24 from three, led by 15 points from Tyler Rice.
Â
After both teams got off to a sluggish start in the first half, with Northeastern leading 18-17 at the break, it was punch-for-punch down the stretch with neither team leading by more than five points throughout the second half.Â
Â
The Tribe, which retook the lead midway through the second half, could never get ahead by more than one possession the rest of the way, keeping Northeastern within striking distance. It wasn't until the final minute of regulation where NU brought the game back to even when
Nikola Djogo buried a three to make it 56 all to send it to overtime.
Â
There, the Huskies bolted out with a 9-0 run to begin the extra session, highlighted by a three from Walters that gave Northeastern a five-point cushion to send the Huskies into the conference quarterfinals.
