Boston University Takes Council Cup Over NU

BOSTON – Dealing with choppy conditions through the first 1000 meters along with a difficult crosswind, the Northeastern women's rowing team returned to the Charles River for the first time this season to take on Boston University and Rhode Island.

Both Northeastern and Boston University got off to clean and aggressive starts to break away from Rhode Island early in the first varsity race, with the Terriers leading the Huskies slightly through the opening 500 meters. As Northeastern settled into its cadence of 36 strokes per minute, it was the Terriers who extended their advantage up to three quarters of a length in the second 500 meters, maintaining the lead the rest of the way to finish at 7:26.6 despite a push from the Huskies (7:32.7) late to close the gap.

The second varsity race saw a similar start for the BU and Northeastern crews with the Terriers ahead marginally. Improved conditions during the second 500 meters allowed Boston University to increase its lead over the Huskies to open water, while Northeastern held off Rhode Island the rest of the way to finish second at 8:00.8.

After officials moved the start of the remaining races up 500 meters due to heavy winds, Northeastern and Boston University were neck and neck through the opening 250 meters of the varsity four 'A' with Rhode Island back in third. The Terriers managed to open up a length lead on the Huskies during the second 500 meters and steadily maintained it through the remainder of the race to win at 6:48.1 with NU in second (7:09.3).

Northeastern closed out the day with an eight-second win over Boston University in the third varsity eight, winning the 1500-meter contest with a time of 6:52.5.

Northeastern will be back in action next weekend when the Huskies travel to Connecticut to take on Radcliffe and Yale.
