TAMPA, Fla. – Former Northeastern University men's hockey player Josh Manson has won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, after they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 2-1 on Sunday evening at Amalie Arena.
Manson, who joined the Avalanche at the trade deadline, accumulated eight playoff points for Colorado, with three goals and five assists and a +6 rating. He assisted on the game-winning goal by Artturi Lehkonen, putting Colorado up 2-1 in the second period.
"I'm thrilled and excited for him," says Director of Athletics and Recreation
Jim Madigan, who served as head coach during Manson's Northeastern career. "It's hard to win a Stanley Cup. We're thrilled for him because he's a wonderful young man who helped our program immensely. To be a Stanley Cup champion, that's something not many people can ever say."
One of Manson's goals also came in this series with Tampa Bay, scoring the second goal in a 7-0 blowout to put Colorado up 2-0 in the series.
"Josh was the first guy that really started to change our culture," says current Fernie Flaman Head Coach
Jerry Keefe, who served on Madigan's coaching staff during Manson's time as a Husky. "He had such a presence to him and he was so well respected by that guys followed. Josh's leadership paved the way for the success we've had as a program. I'm just really excited for him… He's a guy who deserves it."
Josh Manson donned a Huskies sweater from 2011-2014, appearing in 99 games with six goals, and 11 assists for 17 points. He was named captain in his final season with the Huskies before joining the NHL through the Anaheim Ducks organization.
Manson becomes the first Husky to lift the cup as a player since 1986, when Chris Nilan and Randy Bucyk won the trophy with the Montreal Canadiens. Brad Thiessen joined the 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins after Northeastern's season ended, and lifted the cup with Pittsburgh as a practice goaltender.
Jim Madigan served as a scout on that 2009 Penguins team.
