Men's Hockey Welcomes 11 New Huskies for 2022-23 Season

BOSTON - The 2021-22 Hockey East regular season champion Northeastern men's hockey team has announced 11 newcomers to the program for the 2022-23 season. The Huskies will bring back 18 players from that roster and introduce nine incoming freshmen and two transfers to continue to build towards another deep post-season run.
 
The incoming class is made up of five defenders, four forwards, and two goaltenders, with three incoming freshmen being selected in the 2022 NHL draft - read up on the new additions with comments from Fernie Flaman Head Coach Jerry Keefe:
 
#5 - Hunter McDonald - Freshman - Defender - Fairpoint, N.Y.
Fairpoint High School // Chicago (USHL) // Omaha (USHL)
 
  • Defended for Chicago and Omaha in the USHL from the previous 2021-22 season.
  • Was with Omaha from 2020 to 2022 where he tallied five goals and ten assists for 15 points and a +29 rating.
  • Won a 15U National Championship with the Buffalo Sabres Junior Team in the 2017-18 season.
  • Drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL draft.
 
Coach Keefe on McDonald: "Hunter is hard to play against. He's got a big presence every time he steps on the ice. He has a lot of bite to him and is an excellent skating defender with a good reach."
 
#8 - Jackson Dorrington - Freshman - Defender - North Reading, Mass.
Cushing Academy // Des Moines (USHL)
 
  • Played junior hockey in Des Moines (USHL) in the 2021-2022 season appearing in 41 games with three goals and eight assists for 11 points
  • Defended for the Boston Bruins Jrs. in 2020-21 where he played in 33 games recording two goals and 18 assists
  • Was named a 2022 BioSteel All-American
  • Drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL draft.
 
Coach Keefe on Dorrington: "Jackson brings a strong all-around game on offense and defense. He's athletic, he's physical, and his strong all-around strengths make him helpful in all situations."
 
#12 - Cam Lund - Freshman - Forward - Bridgewater, Mass.
Cushing Academy // Green Bay (USHL)
  • Played for Green Bay (USHL) during the 2021-22 season where he tallied 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points
  • Made an appearance for the US U18 National Team in 2021-22
  • Appeared in 40 games for the Boston Bruins Junior Team in 2020-21 where he recorded 17 goals and 17 assists including three goals and an assist in postseason play
  • Drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the 2022 NHL draft.
 
Coach Keefe on Lund: "Cam is expected to be a difference-maker from day one. He has a lot of attributes that will make him a high-impact, dominant first year player."
 
#14 - Liam Walsh - Graduate Student - Forward - Bridgeville, Pa.
Cedar Rapids (USHL) // Merrimack College
  • Spent three seasons at Merrimack, being named assistant captain in his final season, where he tallied 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points in a total of 81 NCAA games.
  • Was a recipient of the 2019 Curt Hammer Award.
  • Played for Cedar Rapids (USHL) from 2015-19 where he was third on the team in scoring in 2018-19 finishing with 25 goals and 19 assists for 44 points in 62 games.
  • Pursuing his Master's in Finance.
 
Coach Keefe on Walsh: "Liam can impact the game in all areas. He plays a heavy two-way game and is an excellent leader. I expect him to play a big role this season."
 
#15 - Jack Williams - Freshman - Forward - Biddeford, Maine
Berwick Academy // Muskegon (USHL)
  • Played four seasons with Muskegon (USHL) from 2019 to 2022, being named captain in 2021-22, making 163 appearances with 45 goals and 71 assists recording a total of 116 points
  • Appeared in the Five Nations Tournament and the Ivan Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2018-19 for Team USA
  • Business major… loves to golf, fish, and surf.
 
Coach Keefe of Williams: "Jack has a great hockey sense and rink awareness. His ability to score and distribute makes him a reliable player in all areas of the rink, and he'll be a leader in our freshman class."
 
#17 - Braden Doyle - Sophomore - Defense - Lynnfield, Mass.
Penticton (BCHL) // Boston University
  • Defended for Penticton (BCHL) in 2021-22 playing in every single game totaling three goals and 24 assists for 27 points
  • Played his freshman season at Boston University appearing in eight games
  • Spent 2018-21 playing for Dubuque (USHL) where he appeared in 104 games tallying 12 goals and 45 assists for 57 points and a +9 rating
  • Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL draft.
 
Coach Keefe on Doyle: "Braden is an offensively gifted defenseman. He's a high-end playmaker and puck distributor who will help us out on both offense and defense."
 
#22 - Vinny Borgesi - Freshman - Defense - Philadelphia, Pa.
Tri City (USHL)
  • Played for Tri-City (USHL) from 2020-22 making 106 appearances recording seven goals and 43 assists for 50 points and had a +/- rating of +30
  • Was invited to the 2022 Colorado Avalanche Development Camp
  • Won a silver medal in the Youth Olympic Games in 2019-20
Coach Keefe on Borgesi: "Vinny plays a mature game for his age. He skates very well and is very competitive on both sides of the puck."
 
#24 - Kyle Furey - Freshman - Defense - Marblehead, Mass.
Lone Star (NAHL) // Youngstown (USHL)
  • Made 48 appearances for Lone Star (NAHL) in 2021-22 scoring seven goals and tallying 27 assists for 34 points and a +19 rating
  • Played for Youngstown (USHL) in 2021-22 where had one goal and nine assists in 46 games
  • General Studies major… enjoys playing tennis and gold outside of hockey
 
Coach Keefe on Furey: "He's a smooth-skating defenseman. Kyle is very good at moving the puck in transition, while defending with his feet."
 
#28 - Anthony Messuri - Freshman - Forward - Arlington, Mass.
Utica (NCDC) // Aberdeen (NAHL) // Arlington High School
  • Appeared in 18 games for Utica (NCDC) in 2021-22 tallying four goals and two assists and appeared in 14 games for Aberdeen (NAHL) tallying five assists
  • Was a four-year varsity letter winner at Arlington High School where became the first public high school player to win the Jon Carleton Memorial Award from the Boston Bruins in over 20 years
  • Was a three-time Middlesex League All-Star, two-time Super 8 State Champion, 2020 Boston Globe Athlete of the Year, and 2020 MIAA All-State First Team
 
Coach Keefe on Messuri: "He's a highly competitive player. He plays with jam and is willing to make plays in the dirty areas."
 
#35 - Harrison Chesney - Freshman - Goalkeeper - Malverne, N.Y.
P.A.L Junior Islanders (NCDC) // Chaminade High School
  • Played in 34 games for the P.A.L Junior Islanders (NCDC) from 2020-22 with a 15-13-4 record 3.04 GAA, and a .910 save percentage
  • Won Chaminade Hockey MVP in 2020 and was a two-time First Team All-Catholic League while playing varsity at Chaminade High School
  • Also played for Westchester Express 18U in 2019-20 recording a 13-18-0 record and a .907 save percentage
Coach Keefe on Chesney: "He's confident in his ability, and has great second efforts on the puck. Harrison can make big saves that keep you in a game. He's quick and athletic."
 
#37 - Grant Riley - Freshman - Goalkeeper - Rochester, N.Y.
Chilliwack (BCHL)
  • Played the 2021-22 season with Chilliwack (BCHL) where he appeared in 38 games with a 2.47 GAA, a .907 save percentage and a 25-10-2 record
  • Appeared in the February 2020 NAHL Top Prospects Game and the 2022 BCHL Top Prospects Game
  • Also spent time with Omaha (USHL) and Tri City (USHL) in 2020-21
 
Coach Keefe on Riley: "He has a good size and takes up a lot of the net. Positionally, Grant is very sound and plays a calm game with good rebound control."
 
The Huskies will also be returning Mike Ricther Award winner and National Rookie of the Year Devon Levi, recent NHL draftee Jack Hughes, and 2021-22 Hockey East First Team All-Star Aidan McDonough among the 19 returners. Northeastern ended the 2021-22 campaign with a 25-13-1 overall record, claiming the Hockey East regular season title for the first time in program history with a 15-8-1 conference record. The Huskies reached the Hockey East semifinals and were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, their eighth overall NCAA tournament appearance, and their third in the last four tournaments.
