BOSTON - The Northeastern University baseball team (2-1) heads on a weekend road stint to Fort Myers and Port Charlotte, Fla. for an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, February 24, and a three-game series with Indiana State on Saturday and Sunday at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. First pitch against the Sox is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on NESN, and Northeastern's double-header with ISU on Saturday is set to begin at 11 a.m. on FloBaseball.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
- STARTING OFF STRONG: The Huskies opened up the 2023 campaign tallying 29 runs in their 2-1 series victory over UNC Greensboro. They won their opening day contest 11-0, which is the largest margin of victory on opening day for the Huskies since 2004 (17-1 over St. Vincent), and the program's first opening day win since 2016 at No. 21 Oklahoma. The 29 runs on opening weekend is the most any Husky team as tallied in the first three games of play since the turn of the century, with the Huskies scoring 34 runs in 1999 in their first three games, including a 20-0 opening day shutout victory.
- NEW FACES:Â On opening day, the Huskies rolled out a lineup with 10 newcomers - five true freshman, and five transfers. They accounted for five of the teams 12 hits, three of the innings pitched, and three of the nine strikeouts in the opening day shutout victory. On the weekend as a whole, the Huskies saw action from eight position players and four pitchers make their Husky debuts. Transfer catcher Jimmy Sullivan was one of those debut players, and was awarded CAA Player of the Week honors after batting .417 (5-for-13) over the weekend, with a three run homer on Sunday.
- LOVE THAT DIRTY WATER: The Huskies will be facing off with the Red Sox for 18th time in program history, dating back to the mid-2000s when the teams first started meeting to kick off the Red Sox preseason schedule. This will be the first meeting since the 2020 season, which was cut short in March after the two teams faced off.
After the Snowbird Classic, the Huskies will embark on their Spring Break trip to Tampa to face the University of South Florida Bulls in a three game series starting on March 3rd. They follow that up with a midweek contest at Duke, and their first weekend of CAA play at Elon the following weekend.
