Huskies Continue Arlett Cup Domination, Beat BU by 7.9 Seconds

BOSTON – Battling rainy conditions, the Northeastern men's rowing team retained the Arlett Cup on Saturday morning as the first varsity knocked off the Terriers by 7.9 seconds on the Charles River.

Since the Arlett Cup began in 1978, the Huskies have won 33 of the 45 races, including 16 of the last 21, and seven of the last 10.
  • Graduate student Rhett Burns led the first varsity to a clean start, as the Huskies held onto an early two-seat advantage. The Terriers responded back though a few meters later, taking the lead by a few seats. The momentum shifted back towards Northeastern heading into the second half of the race, and the Huskies made a strong move to pull back in front. Northeastern remained in control the rest of the way, making a statement with an open water lead, and cruised to the finish line at 5:47.7.
  • The time is Northeastern's fastest in the Arlett Cup race since the team finished at 5:43.7 in 2005.
  • The Huskies went stroke for stroke with the Terriers throughout the second varsity race. Stroked by freshman Aidan Murphy, Northeastern was off to an even start. The Terriers pulled ahead by a seat through the first few meters, but Northeastern remained within striking distance. Boston University led by two seats heading into the second half of the race, but Northeastern regained momentum down the stretch, taking the advantage back and increasing its lead to five seats. The Huskies didn't look back the rest of the way, finishing a little over three seconds ahead of the Terriers at 5:55.2.
  • Stroked by senior Felix Braband in the third varsity, the Huskies remained close with Terriers early, but Boston University pushed the pace and remained in front by a slim margin for most of the race. The Huskies made a move down the stretch to trim the Terriers' lead to three seats, but Boston University crossed the line first at 6:02.0, a little over two seconds ahead of Northeastern.
  • Freshman Charlie McLaren led the Huskies to an early four seat advantage over the Terriers in the fourth varsity, but Boston University kept it close. The Terriers made a push in the second half, holding onto the momentum to cross the line first 6:12.0, three seconds ahead of Northeastern.
The Huskies will head west for the Pac-12 Invitational on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9.
