No. 8 Huskies Fall to No. 7 Harvard by 1.4 Seconds in Course Record Time

BOSTON – Racing in challenging conditions, the No. 8 Northeastern men's rowing team gave No. 7 Harvard all it can handle, falling short by 1.4 seconds for the Smith Cup on Saturday morning.

Stroked by graduate student Rhett Burns, the Huskies were off to a quick start against the Crimson. Harvard began to pull ahead, leading by about two seats, and extended its advantage to five seats going into the halfway point of the race. The Huskies regained momentum into the second half, and made a strong push to cut the Crimson lead down to three seats. The Huskies continued to fight back in the final stretch of the race, trimming the advantage down to a little over a seat, but Harvard was able to hold on for the win. The Crimson crossed the line at 5:30.7, while the Huskies finished strong, right behind at 5:32.1, which set a new course record.
The times also mark the fastest 2K times rowed on the Charles course for both crews.
Harvard has now won the Smith Cup for a 24^th consecutive year, as the Huskies last came out on top over the Crimson in 1997.
Stroked by senior Gus Kynast, Northeastern's second varsity eight got off to a clean start against Harvard. The Crimson began to pull ahead by two seats through the first few meters, and then extended to a quarter of a length lead at the halfway point. Northeastern put the pressure on in the second half of the race, but Harvard finished ahead at 5:36.9. The Huskies crossed the line at 5:44.9.
The Crimson also picked up wins over the Huskies in the 3V and 4V races, finishing at 5:43.4 and 5:45.9, respectively.

The Huskies will race at home on Sunday, April 30 against No. 11 Wisconsin. Races are slated to begin at 8 am.
