WORCESTER, MA. - The Northeastern men's rowing team kicked off postseason competition on Sunday, racing at Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond. After falling in a tight race against Brown in the morning heats for a spot in the grand final, the first varsity eight closed the day in style with a victory in the petite finals.
- In the morning heats, the first varsity went up against strong teams, which included Yale (grand final winner) and Brown, who Northeastern defeated in a photo finish a few weeks ago in Providence by .57 seconds. Through the first 500 meters, Yale led for the top spot, and Brown made a push to go up two seats on the Huskies. Stroked by graduate student Rhett Burns, Northeastern made a push to go up a seat on the Bears at the 1000 meter mark, but Brown immediately fought back to get level. The two crews went stroke for stroke for the second spot behind the Bulldogs in the final stretch of the race with the Bears crossing the line at 5:30.230 in a photo finish ahead of the Huskies. Northeastern finished at 5:30.702.
- The first varsity was strong in their petite final later in the day, pushing the pace after Pennsylvania was leading three seats through the first 500 meters. Northeastern pulled ahead by a few seats at the 1000 meter mark, and then held off a push by Boston University down the stretch, winning with a time of 5:35.020.
- Stroked by senior Gus Kynast, the second varsity went up against a tough field in their heat, finishing third behind Princeton and Brown with a time of 5:44.596. The Huskies then had a solid performance in their petite final, leading through the first half of the race by a few seats before Cornell made a strong move heading into the second half. The Big Red maintained its lead by a few seats down the stretch, and finished ahead of the Huskies at 5:44.254. Northeastern finished less than two seconds behind at 5:46.092.
- After their morning heat, stroked by junior Karim Kane, the third varsity went up against a strong field, which included UPenn, Boston University, Navy and Cornell in the petite final. The Huskies went stroke for stroke with the Big Red down the stretch, but the four in front of Northeastern continued to push the pace. The Huskies finished fifth with a time of 5:56.724, ahead of Wisconsin (5:59.144) who beat them a few weeks ago.
- After finishing fifth in their morning heat, the fourth varsity bounced back with a solid performance in their petite final. Stroked by freshman Elrond Kullman, the Huskies got off to a clean start, going stroke for stroke with Navy and BU. Navy made a move halfway through, and just crossed the line ahead of the Huskies at 5:49.179. The Huskies finished right behind at 5:50.867, and took down BU (5:52.321) who the boat was defeated by earlier this season.Â
The Huskies will close out their spring season at the IRA Championships at Mercer Lake in New Jersey on Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 4.Â
