RICHMOND, Va. – The Northeastern University baseball program took home 14 different honors as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) announced its 2023 All-Conference selections. The Huskies grabbed three of the five major awards, including Rookie of the Year
Cam Maldonado, Defensive Player of the Year
Spenser Smith, and Coach of the Year,
Mike Glavine.
Along with the three major awards, the Huskies placed four players on the All-CAA First Team, and five more on the All-CAA Second Team. Two freshmen were placed on the All-CAA Rookie Team.
Cam Maldonado – Fr. – OF – Wolcott, CT – CAA Rookie of the Year
Maldonado had a storybook freshman season, finishing the regular season with the second-highest batting average on the team after leading the team in the stat for most of the season. He broke the program record for home runs by a rookie, finishing the regular season with 12. He hit for the cycle in April against UMass, the first Husky to achieve that feat in the 2000s. He tallied six RBIs in a game twice this season, and stole a team-high 30 bases on 31 attempts. Maldonado is the fifth-ever Husky to win CAA Rookie of the Year, following in the footsteps of the 2021 honoree,
Cam Schlittler.
Spenser Smith – Sr. – INF – Wellesley, Mass. – CAA Defensive Player of the Year
One of the busiest members of the Northeastern infield,
Spenser Smith's ability to play the shortstop position allows him to make the tough plays look easy. Smith had 129 assists, 62 putouts, and 28 double plays, and just five errors on 196 chances this season, coming off a season in which he was named to the 2022 CAA All-Tournament Team. He had five games this season tallying six or more assists in the contest. Smith is just the third Husky in program history to earn the Defensive Player of the Year honor, and the first since Max Burt in the 2017 season.
Mike Glavine – CAA Coach of the Year
For the fourth time in his career, skipper
Mike Glavine has been named the CAA Coach of the Year after accumulating a program-best 41 wins, and 20 in CAA play. His Huskies have had one of the best seasons in program history, shattering the previous single-season wins record, single-season home run record, and the first-ever Top 25 Ranking in the modern era. The Huskies went a perfect 4-0 against teams Top 25 teams, 7-0 against Top-50 RPI teams, and hold several statistical ranks in the top 25 of the NCAA, including stolen bases (130, 6
th-most in the NCAA) and ERA (3.24, 2

Northeastern's four All-CAA First Teamers were outfielders
Mike Sirota &
Cam Maldonado, starting pitcher
Aiven Cabral, and designated hitter
Alex Lane. Sirota earns his first appearance on an All-Conference squad after making the All-Rookie squad in 2022, while Lane, Cabral, and Maldonado make the team in their first seasons as Huskies.
The Huskies had a strong showing in the second team with infielders
Danny Crossen &
Tyler MacGregor, starting pitcher
Wyatt Scotti, and releivers
Jake Gigliotti and
Griffin Young. Crossen and Scotti each earn their second career All-CAA second team honor – Crossen last made the All-CAA list in 2021, where Scotti was a member of the All-Rookie squad. Scotti repeats as an All-CAA Second Teamer after making the list last season. MacGregor and Young earn their first All-CAA honors as transfers, and Gigliotti earns his first career All-Conference nod.
First-teamers Cabral and Maldonado were also named to the CAA's All-Rookie team, proving to be two of the best 10 freshmen in the conference. Four selections to the First Team is just one shy of the program-best set in the 2021 season – the Huskies' five Second Team selections is a new program record.
The third-seeded Huskies open up conference tournament play on Wednesday, May 24 at 4 p.m. as they face #5-seed William & Mary at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. All CAA Tournament games will stream on FloBaseball, and all Northeastern games will be broadcast on WRBB 104.9 FM.
