BOSTON - Four members of the 2023 Northeastern University baseball team were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) / Rawlings Div. 1 All-Northeast Team on Tuesday morning - outfielders
Mike Sirota (First Team) and
Cam Maldonado (Second Team), designated hitter
Alex Lane (First Team), and starting pitcher
Aiven Cabral (First Team) all made appearances on the All-Region team. The teams are selected by votes by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association, selecting eight regional teams in total.
The Huskies' leadoff man and center fielder,
Mike Sirota followed up his injury-shortened rookie season with a huge sophomore year - he finished the season tied for a team-high 18 home runs, bringing in 54 RBI, and scoring a school record 73 runs on the year. Sirota went .346 in 55 appearances, all starts, with nine doubles, four triples, and 19 stolen bases. Sirota was named to the All-CAA First Team, his second straight year with an All-Conference honor.
Designated hitter
Alex Lane earns First Team All-Northeast honors in his first season as a Husky, leading the team with 58 RBI, the most in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) this season. A consistent piece of the heart of Northeastern's order, Lane was one of the driving forces behind several Northeastern milestones including the team's program-record 106 homers and 426 RBI on the year. Lane was also selected as an All-CAA First Team member.
Already a Freshman All-America Selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), starting pitcher
Aiven Cabral was named a First Team member of the squad after a rookie campaign that saw a team-high 16 starts, nine wins, 83.2 innings pitched, and 69 strikeouts to just 14 walks. The Northeastern pitching staff this year entered the NCAA Tournament with the second-lowest ERA in the nation at 3.57, the eighth-lowest WHIP at 1.28, and the 21st-best K/BB ratio - all three of which were helped by Cabral's incredible rookie season. Cabral was named to the All-CAA First Team and All-Rookie team at the end of the regular season.
The CAA and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Rookie of the Year,
Cam Maldonado earns a Second Team All-Northeast spot after a debut season for the record books. Maldonado tallied 13 home runs in his rookie season, shattering the old program record for rookie homers set in 2012. Maldonado also became the first Husky in the modern era to hit for the cylce, with a 5-for-6, two double, six-RBI day at UMass in April. Maldonado led the team in stolen bases with 32, which was ranked 40th in all of NCAA D1 players, as the Huskies stole a total of 133 on the year, the second-most in a season in program history.
Four All-Region selections is the most in program history, beating out the 2021 All-Northeast team that saw two Huskies on the first team and one on the second team. One of those members, Jared Dupere, went on to be named an ABCA/Rawlings All-American.
