AMESBURY, Mass.— Freshmen
Lisa Jönsson and
Tuva Kandell of the Northeastern women's hockey team earned weekly awards from Hockey East as announced on Monday. Jönsson was tabbed as the Player of the Week, while Kandell claimed Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
The Swedish duo helped lead the Huskies to back-to-back shutout victories over then-No. 10 Connecticut. It marked the first back-to-back shutout wins over a ranked opponent for NU since 2010. The weekly honors mark the first of both of their careers.
Jönsson posted the first two shutouts of her career against UConn in back-to-back starts. She made 24 saves in game one and a career-high 37 saves in game two. The Stockholm, Sweden native leads all goaltenders in Hockey East conference games with a 1.00 GAA and .962 save percentage in her four starts.
Kandell tallied one assist and three blocks in the weekend sweep over UConn. Kandell had an assist the game-winning goal at Connecticut. The Leksand, Sweden native is tied to lead all Hockey East freshmen defensemen with four points.
Jönsson, Kandell and the Huskies are back in action with a two-game series against Maine in Matthews Arena beginning on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
