FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the second and final game of Northeastern University's series with Minnesota, the Huskies (3-2) defeated the Gophers (2-4) by a score of 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium at Lee Health Sports Complex.
Starting pitcher
Wyatt Scotti notched his first win of the season after a strong start, working five innings of three-hit, no-run baseball with three strikeouts, improving his record to 1-1. Offensively it was
Justin Bosland for the second straight game jumping off of the stat sheet going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBI.
- The game was a pitchers' duel for the opening five innings of play – the Huskies got two in scoring position in the fifth on a double from Justin Bosland, and a hit-by-pitch to Gregory Bozzo. After a balk, both runners moved into scoring position, but two line outs and a fly out ended the inning.
- The Huskies struck first in the sixth inning putting up a crooked number on four hits and one error – it began with the Huskies loading the bases with a single for Tyler MacGregor, a fielding error allowing Lane to reach, and a single by Carmelo Musacchia.
- Left fielder Harrison Feinberg earned an RBI on the bases loaded walk to give the Huskies 1-0 lead, and Justin Bosland notched his third hit of the ballgame, a triple down the right field line, to clear the bases for the 4-0 lead.
- The Huskies extended the lead to 5-0 as Bosland ran home on an RBI single by Jack Goodman.
- Another insurance run came in the sixth from Alex Lane, who reached on a double, advanced to third on a pop fly, and ran home on a wild pitch.
- Following Scotti was Aidan Tucker who worked the next two innings allowing no runs or hits, one walk, and three punch outs.
- Minnesota struck back in the bottom of the ninth inning with two runs on two RBI doubles.
- The duo of Jake Gigliotti and Michael Gemma closed out the game. Gigliotti earned a quick 1-2-3 inning in the eighth, before Gemma took over in the ninth allowing just one hit and striking out two.
- The Huskies improve to 3-2, after allowing a season-low two runs in the contest. Northeastern allowed two or fewer runs 21 times in 2023 (20-1 record).
The Huskies head back on the road this weekend for a three-game set at Mercer in Macon, Ga. starting Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m. It's the first of seven straight games on the road for NU, with a midweek at Georgia Tech next Tuesday and a weekend series at Old Dominion March 8-10.
